Objectives
European food industries throw away valuable organic compounds in the waste they produce when processing vegetables. The Safewastes FP6 project identified several antioxidant, antibacterial, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory and probiotic products which can be extracted from these vegetable residues and could provide health benefits when added to animal and human food. Additional information
Several residues from vegetables processing were analysed and found to include many potential beneficial organic substances. The project explored methods to extract them and then tested the obtained substances for their impact in animal health when added to feed.
Some organic additives which were identified had a positive impact on pig and poultry health. Additives extracted from mango, larch, pumpkin and thyme have proved to have benefits when added in small percentages to feed, since they contribute to reduce the chance of intestinal and parasitic infections for sows, broilers and parent stock. This eventually offers benefits for food industries which can reduce waste and develop new products from it. On the other hand animal breeders can improve animal health by substituting conventional additives with organic ones derived from vegetable processing industries and thus reduce the use of antibiotics and other medicaments.
