From handyman to manufacturer: professionalization of self-made mechanisation in Flanders

Objectives
Organic and agro-ecological agriculture is a growing sector in Flanders and within Europe. In combination with short chain sales, it is an interesting business approach for many small and medium-sized businesses. In order to be economically profitable, these companies do need specific mechanisation, which is not always available on the market. Building and adapting the machines themselves is an affordable approach with a result that is fully tailored to the company.
The objective of this OG is to support farmers in building their own machines and other business equipment, by expanding the network around self-construction in Flanders and making it more sustainable.
Objectives
De biologische en agro-ecologische landbouw is een groeiende sector in Vlaanderen en binnen Europa. In combinatie met verkoop via de korte keten is het voor veel kleine en middelgrote bedrijven een interessante bedrijfsaanpak. Om economisch rendabel te zijn hebben deze bedrijven weliswaar nood aan specifieke mechanisatie, die niet altijd beschikbaar is in de handel. Het zelf bouwen en zelf aanpassen van machines is hierbij een betaalbare aanpak met een resultaat volledig op maat van het bedrijf.
De doelstelling van deze OG is het ondersteunen van landbouwers bij het zelf bouwen van machines en ander bedrijfsmateriaal, door het netwerk rond zelfbouw in Vlaanderen uit te bouwen en te verduurzamen.
Activities
In concrete terms, the OG will work with a group of enthusiastic farmers and researchers to translate growers' machine designs (e.g. an electric weed bed, a self-built GPS system with RTK technology and a second machine) into construction plans that will be made available open source. In addition, we are carrying out a feasibility study into making the network in Flanders more sustainable by, among other things, investigating the possibilities of setting up a mobile workshop.
Activities
Concreet gaat de OG aan de slag met een groep van enthousiaste telers en onderzoekers om machine-ontwerpen van telers (bv. een elektrisch wiedbed, een zelfbouw GPS-systeem met RTK-technologie en een 2de machine) te verfijnen en uit te werken tot bouwplannen die open source beschikbaar gesteld worden. Daarnaast voeren we een haalbaarheidsstudie uit naar het verduurzamen van het netwerk in Vlaanderen, door onder andere de mogelijkheden voor de opzet van een mobiel atelier te onderzoeken.
