Greening of peat colonies
Naar een groen verdienmodel voor de Veenkoloniën
Objectives
The report "Perspectives by force" from the Agriculture Committee for Peat Colonies that appeared in 2012 was the direct reason for drawing up the Innovation Program for Agricultural Peat Colonies. A program for renewing the agricultural sector in the Peat colonies that should enable the sector to make the transition as a result of the new agricultural policy of the European Union. Key themes from the innovation program are:
- "Increase in return and income";
- "Use of locally produced energy and mineral resources";
- "Greening";
- And "Knowledge and innovation".
In order to be able to realize the "Greening" theme, the working group "greening peat colonies" was set up by the steering group. Representatives from Avebe, Agrifirm, Cosun, LTO, ANV-Drenthe, ANOG, the Hunze en Aa’s water board, WUR and the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe are members of this working group. Their mission: "to formulate themes and associated projects that offer opportunities for farmers in the Veenkoloniën to make their business operations greener and more sustainable while the earning capacity of the companies is increasing".
Objectives
Het rapport “perspectieven door kracht” van de Commissie Landbouw Veenkoloniën dat verscheen in 2012 is de directe aanleiding geweest voor het opstellen van het Innovatieprogramma Landbouw Veenkoloniën. Een programma voor vernieuwing van de landbouwsector in de Veenkoloniën dat de sector in staat moet stellen de transitie te kunnen maken als gevolg van het nieuwe landbouwbeleid van de Europese Unie. Kernthema’s uit het innovatieprogramma zijn:
- ‘Verhoging van het rendement en inkomen’;
- ‘Gebruik van lokaal geproduceerde energie en minerale grondstoffen’;
- ‘Vergroening’;
- En ‘Kennis en innovatie’.
Om het thema ‘Vergroening’ te kunnen realiseren is door de regiegroep de werkgroep “vergroening Veenkoloniën” ingesteld. In deze werkgroep zitten vertegenwoordigers van Avebe, Agrifirm, Cosun, LTO, ANV-Drenthe, ANOG, waterschap Hunze en Aa’s, WUR en de provincies Groningen en Drenthe. Hun opdracht: ‘thema’s en bijbehorende projecten formuleren die kansen bieden aan de landbouwers in de Veenkoloniën om hun bedrijfsvoering te vergroenen en te verduurzamen terwijl de verdiencapaciteit van de bedrijven stijgt’.
Activities
Completion of the assignment
This assignment has been partially met in the past period: The themes are formulated as well as the follow-up actions. It is now time to turn these actions into concrete projects, to set up feasibility studies and to motivate farmers to actively participate in these projects. The working group asked both agricultural nature associations to take the lead in this and to write projects on behalf of the working groups and in collaboration with the working group, to find partners and to set up feasibility studies. In order to be able to carry out this preliminary process, the nature associations in both provinces in which the Veenkoloniën are located have applied for an EIP subsidy. With the help of this subsidy it can be investigated how the formulated themes can be translated into promising projects, which partners seem to be the most suitable for the implementation of these projects and which organizations should start working together for a maximum chance of success. Even though this EIP subsidy has not yet been promised, the applicants have already started to elaborate on three themes, because the implementation time for the projects becomes too short when delayed.

Invulling van de opdracht
Aan deze opdracht is de afgelopen periode gedeeltelijk voldaan: De thema’s zijn geformuleerd evenals de vervolgacties. Het is nu het moment om deze acties om te zetten in concrete projecten, haalbaarheidsstudies op te zetten en agrariërs te motiveren actief te participeren in deze projecten. De werkgroep heeft beide agrarische natuurverenigingen gevraagd hierin het voortouw te nemen en namens de werkgroepen en in samenwerking met de werkgroep projecten te gaan schrijven, partners te zoeken en haalbaarheidsstudies op te zetten. Om dit voortraject uit te kunnen voeren hebben de natuurverenigingen bij beide provincies waarin de Veenkoloniën gelegen zijn een EIP-subsidie aangevraagd. Met behulp van deze subsidie kan onderzocht worden hoe de geformuleerde thema’s vertaald kunnen worden in kansrijke projecten, welke partners voor de uitvoer van deze projecten het meest geschikt lijken en met welke organisaties samengewerkt moet gaan worden voor een maximale slagingskans. Ook al is deze EIP-subsidie nog niet toegezegd, zijn de aanvragers toch al begonnen met de uitwerking van een drietal thema’s, omdat bij uitstel de uitvoeringstijd voor de projecten te krap wordt.
