Objectives

The objective is to validate innovative management strategies for vineyards and pastures in Cádiz, which accelerate the transformation of conventional intensive production systems to sustainable vineyards that provide ecosystem services, using sustainable practices, in an integrated manner: provision of microbial inoculants (produced from microorganisms from soils in the province and by-products of vinification and pruning remains), implementation of plant covers with native species, and use of sheep to control vegetation. These practices will help to overcome the negative effects caused by "legacy of the soil" and to obtain a higher quality wine with added value.

Objectives

Activities

Summarise existing knowledge about the different practices to be implemented. Characterization of the biodiversity and functionality of the soils from Cadiz vineyards, especially those from the Protected Designation of Origin Jerez-Xérès-Sherry. Selection of soils and microorganisms with biotechnological potential. Design and production of pure and community-based microbial inoculants. Greenhouse evaluation trials (different inoculants, a commercial inoculant and non-inoculated soil) and selection of the most effective ones. Field trials with selected inoculants and grape vinification trials. Dissemination to the scientific community and producers, and training activities.

Activities

Additional comments

Vineyards are essential for the economy and ecology of Cádiz, the Andalusian province with the largest area dedicated to this crop. Traditionally, Cadiz vineyards housed a great biodiversity of plants, insects, and birds. However, the intensification of viticulture and the excessive use of ploughing, fertilizers and pesticides have resulted in vineyards that are highly eroded, biologically impoverished, and much more susceptible to pathogens and pests. Additionally, the growing dependence on agrochemical treatments has negative economic consequences for producers and affects the quality of their products.

The project will collaborate in meet the challenge of the ecological transition demanded by different national and international institutions through different policies and agreements such as: the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by United Nations as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Europeann Green Deal, the Research and Innovation Strategy for the Smart Specialization of Andalusia, among others.
