1 Practice Abstracts

This project reduces nitrogen emissions in and around nitrogen-sensitive nature 2000 areas. Through a collaboration of eleven dairy farmers, the project reduces the excretion from livestock manure to 150 kg or 100 kg nitrogen per hectare per year. Some of the dairy farmers are organic, they will exchange knowledge and experience with their usual colleagues, for example on work without fertiliser.

Through the subsidy scheme for cooperation in peat pastures and in-kind 2000 transitional areas, these eleven dairy farmers want to contribute to reducing nitrogen emissions. By extensifying together, nature restores and enables the Netherlands to close the lock.

Some of the dairy farmers will keep fewer animals than in the current situation. Others provide extra land under their business. But without exception, farmers take measures to reduce their emissions through business operations.

The 2000 areas in kind that benefit from this include, in particular, the Nieuwkoopse plassen, the Zouwebuzem, the UiterValues Lek and the Lingeland/Diefdijk. Nature (and the climate) also benefit from dairy farmers stopping spreading chemical fertilisers


Dit project reduceert de uitstoot van stikstof in en rond stikstofgevoelige natura 2000 gebieden. Door een samenwerking van elf melkveehouders brengt het project de excretie uit dierlijke mest terug tot 150 of 100 kilo stikstof per hectare per jaar. Een deel van de melkveehouders is biologisch, zij zullen kennis en ervaring uitwisselen met hun gangbare collega’s, bijvoorbeeld over werken zonder kunstmest.

Via de subsidieregeling Samenwerking in Veenweiden en natura 2000 overgangsgebieden willen deze elf melkveehouders bijdragen aan het terugbrengen van de stikstofuitstoot. Door samen te extensiveren herstelt de natuur en kan Nederland van het slot.

Een deel van de melkveehouders zal minder dieren gaan houden dan in de huidige situatie. Anderen zorgen voor extra grond onder hun bedrijf. Maar zonder uitzondering nemen de boeren maatregelen om hun emissies terug te dringen via de bedrijfsvoering.

De natura 2000 gebieden die hiervan profiteren zijn met name de Nieuwkoopse plassen, de Zouweboezem, de Uiterwaarden Lek en het Lingegebied / Diefdijk. De natuur (en het klimaat) profiteren ook doordat de melkveehouders stoppen met het strooien van kunstmest
