Detect stray currents on dairy farms
Zwerfstromen opsporen op melkveebedrijven
Objectives
Each dairy farm is equipped with numerous electrical systems, which entails a risk of “stray current”. Stray current occurs when current deviates from the desired electrical circuit. Stray current can cause a lot of inconvenience to cows. They can become nervous, avoid certain places in the barn or drink and eat less. This leads to a decrease in milk production and animal welfare. The aim of the project is to strengthen the knowledge about stray current among all actors in the sector (farmers, consultants and technicians), so that problems caused by stray current can be detected and resolved more quickly.
Objectives
Elk melkveebedrijf is uitgerust met talloze elektrische apparaten, wat steeds een risico op “zwerfstroom” met zich meebrengt. Zwerfstroom ontstaat wanneer stroom afwijkt van het gewenste elektrische circuit. Zwerfstroom kan voor veel ongemak zorgen bij koeien. Zo kunnen ze nerveus worden, vermijden ze bepaalde plekken in de stal of drinken en eten ze minder. Dit leidt tot een daling in de melkproductie en het dierenwelzijn. Het doel van het project is om de kennis over zwerfstroom bij alle actoren in de sector (veehouders, adviseurs en technici) te versterken, zodat problemen door zwerfstroom sneller opgespoord en opgelost kunnen worden.
Activities
The project consists of two main activities:
- To bundle the existing knowledge about stray current in Flanders and to distribute it further to various actors within the sector, i.e. dairy farmers, consultants and technicians.
- To validate the current protocol for measuring stray current in practice and to further explain the protocol to the milking machine technicians by means of practical training sessions, so that problems on the dairy farm can be tackled faster and more efficiently.
Activities
Het project omvat twee hoofdactiviteiten:
- De bestaande kennis rond zwerfstroom in Vlaanderen bundelen en verder verspreiden naar verschillende actoren binnen de sector, nl. melkveehouders, melkwinningsadviseurs, en melkmachinetechnici.
- Het huidige protocol voor het opmeten van zwerfstroom valideren in de praktijk en verder toelichten aan de melkmachinetechnici via praktijkopleidingen, zodat problemen op de melkveebedrijven sneller opgelost kunnen worden.
