Context
The project addresses the growing problem of wildfires in Mediterranean-climate countries, which have increased in frequency and intensity due to climate change and the abandonment of agroforestry activities in rural areas. These wildfires, which devastate large areas and exceed the capabilities of conventional firefighting methods, require new prevention strategies. This situation has led to an international consensus on the need for greater investment in prevention, coordinating policies that promote land use for agricultural, livestock, and forestry activities to reduce the accumulation of forest fuel. In this context, the project aims to design productive firebreaks as a new type of prevention infrastructure, leveraging the potential of productive activities to maintain strategically defined areas free of forest fuel, thereby preventing large-scale wildfires.
Objectives
To design a new type of fire prevention infrastructure (productive firebreaks) that, in strategically defined areas, remain free of forest fuel through agricultural, livestock, forestry use, or possible agroforestry combinations. Additionally, the project aims to implement this new infrastructure in two pilot areas in Extremadura, evaluate its effectiveness using fire propagation simulation models, design a regional map of strategic points, and develop a dissemination plan for its adoption in High Fire Risk Zones (ZAR).
Objectives
Diseñar un nuevo tipo de infraestructura de prevención de incendios (cortafuegos productivos) que, en zonas estratégicamente definidas, se mantengan libres de combustible forestal mediante el uso agrícola, ganadero, forestal o sus posibles combinaciones agroforestales. Además, se busca ejecutar esta nueva infraestructura en dos zonas piloto extremeñas, evaluar su eficacia mediante modelos de simulación de propagación del fuego, diseñar un mapa regional de puntos estratégicos y desarrollar un plan divulgativo para su adopción en las Zonas de Alto Riesgo de Incendio (ZAR)

El proyecto se centra en diseñar nueva infraestructura de prevención de incendios mediante cortafuegos productivos en áreas estratégicas, mantenidas libres de combustible forestal a través de uso agrícola, ganadero o agroforestal. Las actividades clave incluyen la colaboración con los Servicios de Prevención de Incendios y Gestión Forestal de la Junta de Extremadura, diagnósticos y procesos participativos en áreas piloto, redacción de un Manual de Buenas Prácticas y amplia difusión a través de talleres técnicos, publicaciones y redes sociales.

Implementado en dos áreas piloto en Extremadura, España—Valle del Árrago en Descargamaría y Cabeza la Vaca—este proyecto espera crear paisajes resilientes que integren diversos usos del suelo para mitigar los riesgos de incendios exacerbados por el cambio climático.
