Objectives

If companies have no means to measure the cost/benefit is difficult to understand design as an investment. Particularly in the agro-food sector where Portugal has natural and cultural conditions that enable a competitive and offer excellence.

Se as empresas não têm meios para medir o custo/benefício do design, será difícil entender o design como um investimento que acrescenta valor ao negócio. Nomeadamente no sector agro-alimentar onde Portugal possui condições naturais e culturais, que permitem uma oferta competitiva e de excelência.

Activities

The SME know that in a market that is essentially customized and motivated by emotions and experiences, the price is no longer the competitive advantage that interests to Portuguese companies, particularly the SME of agro-food products. Design can help SME to create competitive advantages, because it is a tool management, that invites all to participate in the process of searching what makes them different, what are the needs of people and how they can reduce economic and environmental costs. Design can add sensory and recreational qualities to the product and can also complement the offering with other products, creating other opportunities of interest to the consumer, because in the end what people will keep and remember it will be moments, experiences and emotions that associated to the products.

The purpose of this research is to raise awareness in the SME for the importance of management design, by evaluating the return on investment in design in the Portuguese agro-food. Intend to do so by evaluating the return on investment design in a sector’s sample of in Portugal.

Activities

As PME sabem que num mercado essencialmente motivado por emoções e experiências, o preço deixou de ser a vantagem competitiva possível ou que interessa às empresas portuguesas, nomeadamente às PME do agro-alimentar.

O design pode ajudar as PME a criar vantagens competitivas e um posicionamento sustentável, porque o seu processo de trabalho implica desenhar soluções com e para as pessoas, integrando sempre que possível todos os contributos em função das limitações económicas, ambientais e sociais inerentes. Complementando a oferta com outros produtos, realçando qualidades sensoriais e lúdicas que criam outras oportunidades de interesse para o consumidor, porque no final o que as pessoas recordam, são momentos, emoções, uma oferta imaterial a que se associa experiências, qualidade e bem-estar.

O propósito deste estudo de casos é contribuir para sensibilizar as PME do sector agro-alimentar a investirem em design. Pretende-se fazê-lo através da avaliação do retorno do investimento em design numa amostra de PME do sector e com os resultados obtidos elaborar um modelo de avaliação do investimento em design, que possa ser utilizado pelas PME.

1 Practice Abstracts

The data collected up to the moment show us that Portuguese agro-food industry usually invests in design as a technical skill, because in spite of its interest it actually does not know how to maximize design capabilities.

Based on this information and on the Balanced Scorecard a prototype to evaluate design was created. The indicators depend on the objectives and targets to be reached and also on the means available to evaluate them. Total of 6 indicators were defined: Project, Objectives, Goals, Actions and Qualitative and Quantitative metrics. We are now testing the prototype in two agro-food SME’s (rice and fruits) to evaluate the design contribution.

The prototype plans the company’s strategy and allow contextualize the intervention of the design.

We believe that it can help the companies to understand the contribution of the design to add value.

Os dados recolhidos até ao momento indicam que as empresas do agro-alimentar português investem em design, mas na perspectiva de uma aptidão técnica, porque embora tenham interesse desconhecem como podem rentabilizar as suas competências.

A partir desta informação e tendo por base o Balanced Scorecard construímos um protótipo para avaliação do design, cujos indicadores dependem dos objectivos e metas que se pretendem alcançar, bem como dos meios disponíveis para os avaliar, no total foram definidos 6 indicadores: Projecto, Objectivos, Metas, Acções e Métricas Qualitativas e Quantitativas.

O protótipo planifica a estratégia da empresa e permiti contextualizar a intervenção do design.
