Objectives

One of the important crops grown in cold glasshouses in Flanders is lettuce. This crop is under severe pressure due to heavy infestations of the fungal disease Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lactucae. In the summer months, the crop infestation is so severe and the results are consequently so poor in terms of both yield and quality that several greenhouse growers have stopped growing cabbage lettuce during the summer months. As an alternative, they wonder whether it is possible and economically profitable to grow protein crops in greenhouses.

Objectives

Een van de belangrijke teelten in koude serres in Vlaanderen is de slateelt. Deze teelt staat sterk onder druk door zware aantastingen van de bodemschimmelziekte Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lactucae. In de zomermaanden is de gewasaantasting dermate groot en het teeltresultaat bijgevolg dermate ondermaats voor zowel opbrengst als kwaliteit, dat diverse serreslatelers stoppen met het telen van kropsla gedurende de zomermaanden. Als alternatief vragen ze zich af of het mogelijk en economisch rendabel is om eiwitgewassen in serres te telen.

Activities

This operational group wants to give answers to the questions of lettuce growers, which are cultivation-technical on the one hand and commercial on the other hand. The possibilities for sales on the local market and price setting will be examined. The objective is to examine whether a profit model can be created by building up a new, local chain, starting from greenhouse-grown protein crops such as edamame, chickpeas and red kidney beans.

Activities

Deze operationele groep wil antwoorden bieden op de vragen van telers, die enerzijds teelttechnisch en anderzijds commercieel zijn. De mogelijkheden voor afzet op de lokale markt en prijsvorming zullen onderzocht worden. De doelstelling is om na te gaan of een verdienmodel gecreëerd kan worden door een nieuwe, lokale keten op te bouwen, vertrekkende van in serres geteelde eiwitgewassen zoals edamame, kikkererwten en rode nierbonen.
