Objectives
The goal of the project is to increase the efficiency of chokeberry or other berry production by mitigating negative abiotic factors, and to increase the competitiveness of agricultural farms by developing new food products from chokeberry or other berry by-products left over after processing. The proposed project will improve aronia production by using a by-product from hazelnut production (hazelnut shell) and develop a new product for human consumption from a by-product after aronia processing (aronia pulp).
Activities
The main activities are:
- The use of hazelnut shells as mulch in the production of aronia - procurement of hazelnut husks from organic production, agrotechnical measures of land preparation (milling, monitoring of plant growth and development and analysis of soil quality).
- The development of an innovative product from the aronia pulp - drying and preparation of aronia berries for further use; development, production and analysis of extruded snack products with pulp addition; preparation of chokeberry extract and application in extruded products; analysis of aronia pulp and extruded snack products.

1 Practice Abstracts
Main expected results / outcomes of the activity: The results of the planned tests will show the influence of biomaterials from one orchard (hazelnut husk) on the quality and yield of the fruits of another orchard (aronia orchard). The results of the project will show the profitability of using hazelnut mulch in the production of aronia and other berries. It is expected that the application of mulch will increase the yield and quality of aronia berries and will contribute to easier maintenance of the orchard.
By implementing the project, an innovative product will be developed from the by-product (pulp) after the processing of berries using extrusion technology. The results of the use of extrusion technology in the production of chokeberry pulp products will enable the use of the technology in the production of some other similar products without the need for independent research into the impact of the mentioned process on the by-product.
Main practical recommendations: Hazelnut producers can use hazelnut husks as mulch when growing aronia or other berries. In doing so, the shell will not be disposed of as worthless material, but can be sold on the market. After juice production, berry fruit producers can use the remaining pulp to produce products with higher added value using high technologies such as extrusion. Therefore, instead of producing marmalades or jams, the trope can be used for the production of nutritionally valuable products and a higher market price can be achieved.
