Objectives
The main objective is to implement a new development-innovation project, by applying two different crop technologies with HOHS sunflower hybrids, in order to obtain high stability oils usable in agri-food thermal processing. The aim is to encourage the cultivation of these hybrids, which, through the fatty acid profile ensure a better shelf life of the products, but the benefits of use in food are insufficiently known and promoted.
HOHS oil fractions can replace margarine and palm oil in a healthy diet.
Objectives

2 Practice Abstracts
The reluctance of small farmers to cultivate new sunflower hybrids, with the exception of the linoleic ones, is probably due to the lack of information regarding their behavior, productivity and ways of capitalization of the harvests obtained, as well as of some higher inputs generated by the price of seeds. The genetics and quality of the seeds are an element of major importance, and the contamination with classical flower should be avoided at all stages: sowing, growing season, harvesting, transport, drying, storage and processing of seeds.
The preliminary results of the cultivation of new sunflower hybrids with high content of oleic acid, oleic acid and stearic acid in the Western Plain of Romania, Timis County, Sanpetru Mare Commune, on chernozem soil revealed a good adaptability of these. In 2021, in conventional cultivation, the productivity obtained for hybrids with high oleic acid content was similar to that obtained for linoleic hybrids. The stability of the resulting oil was four times higher, reducing the degree of unsaturation delaying the appearance of oxidation products. The profile of fatty acids in the resulting oil is close to that of the sown material, both for conventional and biological culture.
The average oil content was between 39-45%, and the protein content was 17-18%.
The hybrids cultivated in 2022 showed a good adaptability to the crop, but the climatological conditions determined a low productivity in the absence of irrigation.
The advantages of using oils with a high content of oleic and stearic acid consist in the longer shelf life of thermally processed foods with them and the avoidance of the formation of trans fatty acids by processing at high temperatures.
The expected results of the project are as follows:
- obtaining crops with a high productivity from which to obtain an oil with a good thermal stability, with uses in the agri-food sector, which requires thermal processing;
- stimulating farmers to cultivate new sunflower hybrids in order to diversify raw materials on the agri-food market;
- obtaining HOHS sunflower oil for processing in the food industry and fractions with semi-solid consistency.
Consumers are interested in a healthier diet and are constantly documenting, today more than ever, about products with nutritional properties and beneficial effects on food. Through the proposed project, HOHS oil fractions can replace margarine and palm oil in a healthy diet. Thus, the cultivation of these hybrids, which through the profile of fatty acids ensure a better shelf life of products with increased benefits in the diet, will lead to a high market demand.
By disseminating the results obtained through the project, all these benefits will be presented, increasing the interest of producers, processors, including consumers for HOHS sunflower cultivation
Rezultatele asteptate ale proiectului sunt urmatoarele:
- obtinerea de recolte cu o productivitate ridicata din care sa se obtina un ulei cu o buna stabilitate termica, cu utilizari in sectorul agroalimentar, ce necesita procesare termica;
- stimularea fermierilor de a cultiva noi hibrizi de floarea soarelui in scopul diversificarii materiilor prime pe piata agroalimentara;
