Objectives

The main objective of the project is to develop fresh and cooked meat substitute products made from local vegetable protein sources, promoting the “plant-based" value chain in Catalan agriculture.

Context

Replacing meat products with meat substitutes is a growing trend. As far as the Spanish market is concerned, between 2019 and 2020, sales of so-called "plant-based meat" amounted to 87 million euros with a growth of 31% in terms of sales value.
New substitute products being developed food companies in response to growing consumer demand should be an opportunity for the primary sector to contribute valuable ingredients to the formulation of these products.
In the market for meat substitutes this "identity" can only be based on the origin of the ingredients they use. Therefore, the use of local ingredients, as well as being an opportunity for the Catalan primary sector, can also act as a seal of quality for producers of meat substitutes.
