In a globalized context where the ownership of seeds is in the hands of large multinationals, the conservation and care of local varieties is a challenge to keep these varieties alive and growing. This will allow future generations to continue enjoying these products and continue to be a real part of agricultural production on farms in the surrounding area.
Having local varieties is to understand that precisely these are the ones that have managed to adapt to the soil and environmental conditions of each area, in addition to being selected for their organoleptic qualities. In this sense, the recovery and maintenance of these varieties not only involves recovering a patrimony, but bets on producing those varieties best adapted to our environment. It is very important, in the current agricultural context, to have not only varieties containing morphological and organoleptic values; but also better adaptation to local conditions will mean a reduction in phytosanitary treatments as crops present less problematic diseases.
The "Guindilla de Ibarra" and "Pimiento de Gernika", unlike countless local varieties kept in seed banks is still a living variety, with a great acceptance among consumers who consider it as one of the best references in our horticulture.
Objectives
To apply preventive control strategies against viruses that improve the productivity of the pilot farms and then of the rest of the horticultural farms, improving the "Ibarra chilli" and "Gernika pepper" subsectors in Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia. To select and design a network of chilli cultivation plots. To carry out a data collection in pilot plots. To monitor the implementation of practices based on the use of resistant varieties and control measures. Comparing original sensitive local varieties and the new resistant varieties. To transfer and disseminate the most effective and appropriate cultural practices to the professional production sector.

Aplicar estrategias de control preventivo de virosis que mejoren la productividad de las fincas piloto y posteriormente la del resto de fincas hortícolas, mejorando los subsectores de "guindilla de Ibarra" y "pimiento de Gernika" en Gipuzkoa y Bizkaia. Seleccionar y diseñar una red de parcelas de cultivo. Realizar una toma de datos en parcelas piloto. Seguimiento de la implantación de prácticas basadas en la utilización de variedades resistentes y aplicación de medidas de control. Comparación de variedades locales sensibles originales y nuevas variedades resistentes. Transferencia y difusión de las prácticas más eficaces y adecuadas al sector productor profesional.
Activities
The Ibarra pepper and Gernika pepper are a local varieties appreciated but sensitive to Tobamoviruses transmitted by seeds and contact during crop cultural practices that cause serious production losses affecting both the fresh product in local markets and the pickled product used by the packaging industry in pickled Ibarra chili peppers.
The problem will be addressed by reducing the incidence of virosis in pilot plots through the use of resistant varieties, and establishment and application of a protocol for hygiene and preventive cultural practices to vegetable producers, finally, with the transfer of experience to the rest of the professional sector.

La guindilla de Ibarra y el pimiento de Gernika son variedades locales apreciadas pero sensible a virus del tipo Tobamovirus transmitidos por semilla y por contacto durante las operaciones de cultivo que provocan graves mermas de producción afectando tanto al producto fresco en mercados locales como al producto encurtido utilizado por la industria envasadora en la guindilla de Ibarra.
El problema se abordará reduciendo la incidencia de virosis en parcelas piloto mediante el uso de variedades resistentes, y el establecimiento y aplicación de un protocolo de medidas preventivas de higiene en el cultivo y, finalmente, con la transferencia de la experiencia al resto del sector.

Over the last few years, the market demand is higher than the real supply and there is currently a very large deficit to cover the needs of packaging companies.
This significant inflows of products from other areas, both from the State and from countries outside the European Community may endanger the future of the sector.
This mismatch between supply and demand is due to the production problems existing in these crops:
Those associated with the lack of crop rotation, which entails a progressive increase in soil pathogens associated with cultivation, mainly caused by the increase of soilborne pathogens like Verticillium and Phytopthora fungi and root-knot nematodes. The solution to this problem is crop rotation, which is sometimes not easy or possible due to the renting of plots and specialization of farmers. The application of soil biodesign techniques (green fertilizers, introduction of biocidal plants to the soil, biodisinfestation with organic amendments) can help to reduce the problem through the reduction of activity and population of soilborne pathogens and the improvement of soil structure.
There are also problems associated with virosis transmitted by contact (Tobamoviruses) and aphids (CMV, PVY) that cause serious production losses affecting both the fresh product and the product used by the packaging industry, which are the main uses of the product.
Recently, a growing incidence of the CMV virus (Cucumber Mosaic virus) has been detected in the open-air Guindilla plantations in Gipuzkoa. This virus produces very serious alterations in the fruits affecting their morphology at the level of thickening of the fruit and twisting thereof. In their internal part they fill exaggerated and early seeds that harden the quality of the fruit.

1 Practice Abstracts
1. The results of accumulated production in pilot trials established in different horticultural farms on a commercial cultivation scale (2022 and 2023) have shown that the resistant varieties of pepper (“Gudari”) or chilli pepper (“Irribarra”) have shown a production equal to or greater than the sensitive varieties of pepper (“Derio”) or chilli pepper (“Ibarroria”).
2. The resistant lines of pepper (DG4-4, DG3-7) and chilli pepper (IG6-2) showed a lower production than the sensitive varieties of pepper (“Derio”) or chilli pepper (“Ibarroria”).
3. The production results of the pilot trials are consistent with the results obtained in the statistically designed trials previously carried out at NEIKER (2021 and 2022).
4. The germination of some new resistant varieties was lower, and several seedlings exhibited reduced vigor during the seedling phase.
5. The behavior of the resistant pepper or chilli varieties in farms with a previous history of Tobamovirus infections was good, with no plants affected by these viruses.
6. The results of the 2022 organoleptic tasting have shown that the differences were not very important, although slightly favorable to the sensitive chilli.
7. The ordering of the total score obtained in the 2022 tasting was more related to the horticulturist, and therefore to the crop management conditions, than to the genotype of the plant material.
8. The same variety achieved both high scores and low scores, regardless of whether it was resistant or sensitive, so at a general level it could be said that there were no significant differences.
9. In addition to reducing the risk of Tobamovirus, a protocol has been developed that includes other broader measures aimed at controlling other viruses.

Los resultados de producción acumulada en ensayos piloto establecidos en diferentes explotaciones de horticultores a escala de cultivo comercial (2022 y 2023) han mostrado que las variedades resistentes de pimiento (“Gudari”) o guindilla (“Irribarra”) han mostrado una producción igual o superior a las variedades sensibles de pimiento (“Derio”) o guindilla (“Ibarroria”).
2. Las líneas resistentes de pimiento (DG4-4, DG3-7) y de guindilla (IG6-2) mostraron una producción inferior a las variedades sensibles de pimiento (“Derio”) o guindilla (“Ibarroria”).
3. Los resultados de los ensayos piloto son coincidentes con los resultados obtenidos en los ensayos con diseño estadístico previamente realizados en NEIKER (2021 y 2022).
4. La germinación de algunas nuevas variedades resistentes fue más baja y varias plántulas exhibieron un reducido vigor durante la fase de semillero.
5. El comportamiento de las variedades resistentes de pimiento o guindilla en explotaciones con historial previo de infecciones por Tobamovirus fue bueno, no encontrándose plantas afectadas.
6. Los resultados de la cata organoléptica 2022 han mostrado que las diferencias fueron poco importantes, aunque ligeramente favorable a la guindilla sensible.
7. La ordenación de la puntuación total obtenida en la cata 2022 se relacionó más con el horticultor (condiciones de manejo del cultivo) que con el genotipo del material vegetal.
8. Una misma variedad alcanzó tanto puntuaciones altas como puntuaciones bajas, con independencia de si era resistente o sensible. No hubo diferencias importantes de puntuación total.
9. Además de reducir el riesgo de Tobamovirus, se ha desarrollado un protocolo que contempla otras medidas más amplias que persiguen el control de otros virus.
