Physical & demographic characteristics of LAG area

Kyjovské Slovácko in Motion is located in the southeastern part of the Czech Republic, within the administrative boundaries of the South Moravian Region, and is part of the NUTS II Southeast territorial unit. The Local Action Group (LAG) encompasses 45 municipalities and covers a total area of 500.05 km².

As of December 31, 2019, the area had 61,861 permanent residents, resulting in a population density of approximately 123.7 inhabitants per km². The territory constitutes a natural and functional region, characterized by long-term stability and effective cooperation among all administrative units.

The area is predominantly rural and is structured into six micro-regions, which were established to foster intermunicipal cooperation at a smaller scale.

Assets & land use of the LAG area

Most of the land in the region—and within individual municipalities—is used for agriculture, with arable land being dominant. While organic farming remains limited, viticulture plays a key role in the landscape and economy. A substantial portion of the area is also covered by forest land that fulfills important ecological functions.

Local life has long been deeply connected with nature. Original vegetation consists mainly of oak woodlands, home to a rich variety of Carpathian plant and animal species. The landscape forms a mosaic of vineyards, orchards, and fields, interspersed with steppe slopes, groves, and fishponds.

The area includes several small protected natural sites such as nature reserves, monuments, heritage trees, and parks. It is part of the Natura 2000 network and contains five supra-regional elements of the Territorial System of Ecological Stability (TSES), underlining its ecological value.

Key Themes of LAG Strategy

Our strategy focuses on sustainable development of the Kyjovské Slovácko region through five key themes:

  • Strong local economy – support for small businesses, innovation, traditional crafts, and employment opportunities.
  • Quality rural life – improving education, healthcare, and social services, with a focus on inclusion and community cohesion.
  • Nature and landscape – sustainable land use, water retention, biodiversity protection, and climate adaptation.
  • Tourism and heritage – developing infrastructure, promoting local culture, traditions, and wine tourism.
  • Modern infrastructure – enhancing transport, digitalization, energy efficiency, and smart village solutions.

Together, these themes reflect our shared vision for a thriving, resilient, and proud rural region.
