Farm Sustainability Data Network (FSDN) - workshop

The workshop started with a framing presentation on the new Farm Sustainability Data Network (FSDN), which builds on the 60-year-long experience of the Farm Accountability Data Network (FADN) and reflects the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)'s focus on sustainability. The presentation included an overview of the key achievements so far and of upcoming activities and tools.

Representatives from Ireland and Italy shared positive experiences with the transition to Farm Sustainability Data Network (FSDN). Key points stressed during the session included the importance of ensuring the data collection process benefits farmers (rather than being seen as an additional burden) and the possibility to use FSDN variables for environmental and social analysis, too.

The following session explored positive experiences with current use of FADN data and foreseen use of FSDN information from an evaluation perspective, with Sweden and Flanders (Belgium) sharing key learnings.

Parallel group discussions allowed the participants to exchange with each other in smaller groups on challenges and success stories in relation to four topics: new possibilities related to improved data sharing, using FADN/FSDN information for CAP plans management and evaluation, farmers’ motivation, and effective communication and awareness raising.

The workshops concluded with an expert panel where Managing Authorities, European Commission and farmer organisation representatives shared their reflections and noted challenges and opportunities for the future. Lots of different perspectives and experiences from across the EU were shared during the meeting and are summarised in this report.
