Objectives
The Si.pom project (acronimo) has as main objective to enhance the Sicilian pomegranate culture not only for the production of juice but also through the use of nutraceutical and health substances obtained from immature fruits (baby fruit) and by-products (peels, seeds)) which find numerous uses in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and medical fields. This will contribute to a further increase in the income of the agricultural entrepreneur through the diversification of products and greater sustainability of the production cycle thanks to the development of a circular economy
Objectives
Il progetto Si.pom (acronimo) ha come obiettivo principale quello di valorizzare la coltura del melograno di Sicilia non solamente per la produzione di succo ma anche attraverso l’impiego delle sostanze nutraceutiche e salutistiche ottenute dei sottoprodotti (frutti immaturi o baby fruit, bucce e semi) che trovano numerosi impieghi in campo farmaceutico, nutraceutico e medicale. Ciò contribuirà ad un ulteriore incremento del reddito dell’imprenditore agricolo mediante la diversificazione dei prodotti e ad una maggiore sostenibilità del ciclo produttivo grazie allo sviluppo di economia di tipo circolare.

t the start of the project: 1) selected the pomegranate production plants to which the innovation will be transferred; 2) Adopted improvements in the agronomic management of plants for the production of ripe fruits in order to decrease the inhomogeneity of the juice composition; 3) Collection of immature fruits and preparation for the phase of extraction of polyphenolic compounds; 4) Biochemical analysis on the cytotoxicity of the polyphenolic compounds extracted; 5) Valorisation of by-products and their alternative use; 6) Marketing and sales strategies
Activities
All'avvio del progetto verranno: 1) selezionati gli impianti produttivi di melograno ai quali verrà trasferita l'innovazione; 2) Adottati dei miglioramenti nella gestione agronomica degli impianti per la produzione dei frutti maturi al fine di diminuire la dis-omogeneità della composizione del succo; 3) Raccolta dei frutti immaturi e preparazione per la fase di estrazione dei composti polifenolici; 4) Analisi biochimica sulla citotossicità dei composti polifenolici estratti; 5) Valorizzazione dei sottoprodotti e il loro utilizzo alternativo
