Contexte

Brown spot of pear (BSP), caused by the fungus Stemphylium vesicarium, has been a problem in Flemish pear production since 2001. Research in several European countries, including Belgium, led to an effective control strategy, which initially limited the impact of the disease. In recent years, brown spot problems in pears have been increasing again in certain parts of Flanders. This is partly due to the changed availability of plant protection products for the control of this pathogen and the more frequent occurrence of stress situations such as extreme weather conditions. Growers in the Waasland region experience severe damage reaching 30% and sometimes higher. They expressed the need to develop suitable sustainable treatment schemes against this disease.

Activities

Several field trials will be set up to investigate the effect on Brown spot of pear (BSP) of plant enhancers, of products that reduce stress in the orchard and of products that can restore soil microbial balance. The sensitivity of the Stemphylium population to currently available crop protection products will also be assessed. Based on the results from the different tasks, an optimised treatment schedule for the reduction of damage by Brown spot of pear (BSP) will be developed.

1 Practice Abstracts

The operational group Stemphystress aims to develop, in collaboration with growers, new control schemes for Brown spot of pear (BSP) to limit future damage and improve the profitability of farms that have suffered significant losses. Sub-objectives include reduction of stress factors in pear orchards, examination of altered susceptibility of the Stemphylium population to currently available chemical crop protection products, investigation of the effect of products that can restore the soil microbial balance.
