Objectives

The proposed research project is to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of the walnut supply chain by introducing innovations in all phases of the production process.
Specific objectives are the following:
1. Rationalize the use of water resources;
2. Evaluate the physiological response and the qualitative-quantitative yield of plants subjected to different irrigation regimes;
3. Experiment with the possibility of reusing the first processing waters (shearing);
4. Develop guidelines for the management of the walnut supply chain;
5. Evaluate consumer acceptability of new health products (energy bars) based on shelled walnuts.

Objectives

Il piano d’innovazione proposto intende migliorare la competitività e la sostenibilità della filiera noce da frutto introducendo innovazioni in tutte le fasi del processo produttivo.
Obiettivi specifici sono:
1. Razionalizzare l’impiego della risorsa idrica;
2. Valutare la risposta fisiologica e la resa quali-quantitativa di piante sottoposte a differenti regimi irrigui;
3. Sperimentare la possibilità di riutilizzare le acque di prima lavorazione (smallatura);
4. Mettere a punto linee guida per la gestione della filiera del noce da frutto;
5.Valutare l’accettabilità da parte dei consumatori di nuovi prodotti salutistici (barrette energetiche) a base di noci sgusciate.

Activities

For the definition of a computerized operating protocol capable of assisting the producer in the management of irrigation systems, field tests and experimental surveys will be carried out aimed at fine-tuning the IRRINET model.
The possibility of reusing first processing water (smallatura) will be tested by implementing a "prototype plant". 
To develop the guidelines for the management of the walnut fruit supply chain, the necessary information will be collected in the field and during the storage phase.
Consumer acceptability of shelled walnut energy bars will be assessed through consumer testing.

Activities

Per la definizione di un protocollo operativo informatizzato in grado di assistere il produttore nella gestione degli impianti irrigui saranno effettuate prove di campo e rilievi sperimentali finalizzati alla messa a punto del modello IRRINET.
Sarà sperimentata la possibilità di riutilizzare le acque di prima lavorazione (smallatura) implementando un “impianto prototipo”. 
Per mettere a punto le linee guida per la gestione della filiera del noce da frutto saranno raccolte in campo e durante la fase di stoccaggio le informazioni necessarie.
L’accettabilità da parte dei consumatori di barrette energetiche a base di noci sgusciate sarà valutata attraverso consumer test.

2 Practice Abstracts

Thanks to field tests and experimental surveys aimed at fine-tuning the IRRINET model, it will be possible to obtain:
a) a seasonal growth model of the fruit and the plant's vegetative-productive performance;
b) quantify the mineral removals (macro and micronutrients) of the fruits, to be used to develop the most appropriate fertilization plan;
c) develop the software to guide the irrigation of fruit nuts integrated with the DSS Irrinet / Irriframe systems.
The design, construction and testing of the prototype will allow the development of a system capable of reusing the water from the first processing (fruit hulling) in subsequent processing cycles; system to be extended on an industrial scale.
The creation of guidelines for the management of the fruit nut supply chain with a view to modern and sustainable nociculture, will improve the qualitative and quantitative yields of the plants belonging to the Noci di Romagna group.
The consumer tests will make it possible to verify the acceptability and propensity to purchase by the consumer of new health products (energy bars) based on Romagna walnuts; this information will be useful for setting up any promotional and marketing campaigns for this new type of product.

Grazie alle prove di campo e rilievi sperimentali finalizzati alla messa a punto del modello IRRINET sarà possibile ottenere:
a) un modello di accrescimento stagionale del frutto e delle performance vegeto-produttive dell’impianto;
b) quantificare le asportazioni minerali (macro e micronutrienti) dei frutti, da impiegare per mettere a punto il piano di fertilizzazione più adeguato;
c) mettere a punto il software per guidare l’irrigazione del noce da frutto integrato ai sistemi DSS Irrinet/Irriframe.
La progettazione, realizzazione e sperimentazione dell’impianto prototipo consentirà di mettere a punto un sistema capace di riutilizzare le acque di prima lavorazione (smallatura del frutto) in successivi cicli di lavorazione; sistema da estendere poi su scala industriale.
La creazione di linee guida per la gestione della filiera del noce da frutto nell’ottica di una moderna e sostenibile nocicoltura, permetterà migliorare le rese quali-quantitative degli impianti facenti parti del gruppo Noci di Romagna.
I consumer test consentiranno di verificare l’accettabilità e la propensione all’acquisto da parte del consumatore di nuovi prodotti salutistici (barrette energetiche) a base di noci di Romagna; tali informazioni saranno utili per impostare eventuali campagne promozionali e di marketing di questa nuova tipologia di prodotto.

The information collected at the S. Martino Farm made it possible to quantify and test the water needs of the walnut in order to improve the parameters used by the Irriframe DSS. On the basis of what was observed during the experimentation, the possibility of acting on the Irriframe model to reduce the irrigation needs of this species by 30% is concretely confirmed. The tests conducted on 2 farms in the Romagna area to evaluate the influence of the age of the walnut grove on consumption and verify the irrigation intervention thresholds according to the irrigation method adopted and the type of soil, allowed the validation of the irrigation management model with the water balance of the Irriframe DSS in different pedoclimatic conditions.
The design, construction and testing of the prototype made it possible to develop a system capable of reusing the shaving water in subsequent processing cycles.
The guidelines created for the management of the walnut supply chain are able to indicate what characteristics the soil and farms must have, in order to undertake an investment in walnut with a view to modern and sustainable cultivation, allowing to improve the qualitative and quantitative yields of the plants belonging to the Noci di Romagna group.
The acceptability and propensity to purchase by consumers of new health products (energy bars) based on Romagna walnuts was verified; this information will be useful for setting up any promotional and marketing campaigns for this new type of product.

Le informazioni raccolte presso l’Azienda S. Martino hanno permesso di quantificare e testare le necessità idriche del noce da frutto al fine di migliorare i parametri/coefficienti utilizzati dal DSS Irriframe. Sulla base di quanto osservato durante la sperimentazione è concretamente confermata la possibilità di agire sul modello Irriframe per ridurre del 30% le esigenze irrigue di questa specie. Le prove condotte su 2 aziende del territorio romagnolo per valutare l’influenza dell’età del noceto sui consumi e verificare le soglie di intervento irriguo in funzione del metodo di irrigazione adottato e del tipo di terreno, hanno consentito di validare il modello di gestione irrigua con il bilancio idrico del DSS Irriframe in condizioni pedoclimatiche differenti.
La progettazione, realizzazione e sperimentazione dell’impianto prototipo ha consentito di mettere a punto un sistema capace di riutilizzare le acque di smallatura in successivi cicli di lavorazione.
Le linee guida create per la gestione della filiera del noce da frutto sono in grado di indicare quali siano le caratteristiche che devono avere il suolo e le aziende agricole, per poter intraprendere un investimento in nocicoltura nell’ottica di una moderna e sostenibile nocicoltura, permettendo di migliorare le rese quali-quantitative degli impianti facenti parti del gruppo Noci di Romagna.
E’ stata verificata l’accettabilità e la propensione all’acquisto da parte del consumatore di nuovi prodotti salutistici (barrette energetiche) a base di noci di Romagna; tali informazioni saranno utili per impostare eventuali campagne promozionali e di marketing di questa nuova tipologia di prodotto.
