Innovative study of robotic mowing in cider orchards

Objectives
In this emblematic crop of north-western France and Normandy, the harvest of apples on the ground is entirely mechanized. Conventionally, the apple tree row is bare, but we are witnessing a decrease in authorized herbicides. In organic farming (30% of cider orchards), the grass in the row must also be controlled, the use of herbicides is prohibited and solutions to prevent growth have side effects. This project therefore proposes to test an innovative alternative solution for mowing the orchard, whether conventional or organic. It will be a question of studying a new way of maintaining orchard grassing through autonomous mowing.
Objectives
Dans cette culture emblématique du nord-ouest de la France et de la Normandie, la récolte des pommes au sol est entièrement mécanisée. En conventionnel le rang de pommier est nu, mais on assiste à une diminution des substances herbicides autorisées. En agriculture biologique (30% des vergers cidricoles), l’herbe dans le rang doit aussi être maitrisée, l’usage d’herbicides est prohibé et les solutions pour empêcher la pousse présentent des effets secondaires. Ce projet se propose donc de tester une solution alternative innovante pour la tonte du verger qu’il soit conventionnel ou bio. Il s’agira d’étudier un nouveau mode d’entretien de l’enherbement du verger grâce à la tonte autonome.

Coordination, animation and definition of common protocols. Discussions with manufacturers present on the autonomous mowing market, drawing on the expertise of researchers from the INRAE team and the field experience of CRAN's specialist orchard advisers to prepare the trials.
Performance tests in the orchard on several experimental sites (permanent plot dedicated to the IFPC cider station and 4 to 5 other orchards located with partner arborists)
Dissemination of research: summary sheets published on the internet, organization of a demonstration day, conferences during technical days or trade shows
Coordination, animation et définition de protocoles communs. Echanges avec les constructeurs présents sur le marché de la tonte autonome en s’appuyant sur l’expertise des chercheurs de l’équipe INRAE et l’expérience terrain des conseillers spécialisés vergers de la CRAN pour préparer les essais.
Tests de performances au verger sur plusieurs sites expérimentaux (parcelle permanente dédiée à la station cidricole de l’IFPC et 4 à 5 autres vergers implantés chez des arboriculteurs partenaires)
Diffusion des recherches : fiches de synthèse publiée sur internet, organisation d’une journée de démonstration, conférences lors de journées techniques ou salons professionnels
