Context
Soils are fundamental to life on Earth, delivering key ecosystem services such as food production, water regulation, climate mitigation, and biodiversity support. Yet, 60-70% of EU soils are currently unhealthy, leading to significant environmental and economic losses. Soil degradation, urbanisation, and land use intensification continue to threaten soil health and sustainability. Against this backdrop, the EU Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe” provides a roadmap to reverse these trends by mobilising citizens and organisations in the protection and restoration of soil health.
However, low soil literacy and weak citizen engagement remain major barriers to this transformation. There is a growing need for interdisciplinary and creative approaches to make soil science relevant, accessible, and emotionally resonant for society at large. Practitioners, educators, local authorities, artists, and businesses lack tailored tools, training, and platforms to effectively communicate soil issues and co-create solutions with communities.
SOILTRIBES responds to these challenges by activating a multi-actor, multi-layer network across Europe. It empowers practitioners and end-users through participatory formats, innovative educational resources, and artistic storytelling. By integrating science, arts, and society, the project aims to foster deep connections to soil, inspiring behavioural change and stewardship. It creates spaces for co-creation, experimentation, and dialogue, seeding long-term transformation and amplifying soil literacy across sectors, generations, and territories.
Objectives
SOILTRIBES aims to catalyse a societal shift toward increased soil awareness and action by fostering innovation, creativity, and collective engagement. The project will build and activate a multi-actor ecosystem—composed of Communities of Practice (CoP), Stewardship Assemblies, and Soil Lab Activators—united by a shared commitment to soil health. It will:
- Establish a collaborative and transdisciplinary network that empowers actors from across the quintuple helix to co-create innovative solutions for soil literacy and connectivity.
- Implement a comprehensive Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP) scheme, enabling 30 cross-border, place-based initiatives and 32 micro-grants, targeting communication campaigns, creative soil-related activities, and citizen engagement actions.
- Recognise and promote the role of cultural and creative industries (CCIs) and art-based approaches in mobilising citizens and embedding soil values in everyday life.
- Develop accessible and engaging edutainment tools and resources—such as soil tales, thematic policy collections, and train-the-trainer packages—supporting educators, policymakers, businesses, and citizens.
- Disseminate outcomes widely through targeted communication strategies and social media campaigns, connecting with wider initiatives and ensuring uptake of best practices.
- Support cross-fertilisation with other Soil Mission projects, aligning efforts with Mission Soil goals and contributing to a climate-neutral society that values and protects its soils.
By integrating science, art, and society, SOILTRIBES promotes an inclusive, emotionally resonant, and action-oriented approach to soil stewardship across Europe.
Activities
SOILTRIBES unfolds a rich set of interconnected activities designed to boost soil literacy and engagement through creativity, participation, and systemic change. The action is structured around seven work packages (WPs), each contributing to a vibrant, transdisciplinary and glocal ecosystem that brings together actors from science, art, education, policy, and civil society.
WP1 – Energising the SOILTRIBES ecosystem
This WP initiates and nurtures a Europe-wide Community of Practice (CoP) composed of actors from the quintuple helix (Academy, Business, Government, Civil Society, and Art). It supports seven Soil Lab Activators—local clusters coordinated by experienced partners—and Stewardship Assemblies—participatory platforms led by municipalities that involve citizens in identifying soil challenges and co-designing solutions. Through design-thinking journeys, twinning visits, and cross-regional exchanges, the project facilitates mutual learning, peer mentoring, and the co-creation of innovative soil literacy approaches.
WP2 – Galvanising Innovation and Behavioural Change
At the heart of SOILTRIBES is a €1.7 million Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP) mechanism. This funding scheme supports:
- 30 place-based soil initiatives led by artists, educators, community groups and SMEs;
- 32 micro-grants for CoP members to develop pilot actions, exchange knowledge, and scale successful ideas. These bottom-up initiatives activate behavioural change and test new ways of connecting people to soil through creative expression, participatory events, and local campaigns.
WP3 – Creating Edutainment Tools & Resources
SOILTRIBES translates complex soil knowledge into engaging and accessible formats. It develops a range of educational and storytelling resources, including:
- An artistic soil tale co-created with artists and soil scientists;
- A train-the-trainer package and crash course on soil communication for educators and professionals;
- Thematic policy collections connecting soil to key societal topics like food, climate, and health;
- Manuals for running soilathons, soilblitz, and citizen assemblies. These tools help diverse audiences to learn about, connect with, and act for soils in their daily lives.
WP4 – Pollinating Widely
This WP drives large-scale citizen outreach through over 200 events such as science festivals, artistic performances, exhibitions, hands-on workshops, and school activities. It also supports soil-focused networking events and “acceleration” moments to promote entrepreneurial solutions. The goal is to mobilise and inspire communities of all ages and backgrounds, making soil a visible and valued part of European culture.
WP5 – Dissemination & Exploitation
To ensure visibility and long-term uptake, the project implements a robust communication strategy. Activities include:
- A dynamic project website and active social media presence;
- Podcasts, comics, and media campaigns tailored to different audiences;
- Policy briefs and practice abstracts to inform and influence stakeholders;
- A sustainability and exploitation plan to ensure that results continue to be used and amplified beyond the project’s lifetime.
WP6 – Project Coordination and Management
Led by INOVA+, this WP ensures sound management, timely delivery, risk mitigation, and compliance with Horizon Europe rules. It also facilitates internal communication among partners and the European Commission.
WP7 – Ethics Requirements
This WP guarantees full adherence to ethical standards, especially in terms of data collection, inclusion, and engagement with vulnerable groups.
Together, these activities create a dynamic and inclusive environment for knowledge exchange, experimentation, and cultural transformation. By making soil visible, relatable, and meaningful, SOILTRIBES empowers communities to become active stewards of soil health, contributing directly to the objectives of the EU Soil Mission and the European Green Deal.

1 Practice Abstracts
The SOILTRIBES project addresses the pressing issue of soil degradation by fostering soil literacy and promoting sustainable soil management through a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach. The project is driven by a diverse consortium of 25 partners from 11 different countries, including scientific institutions, artists, and civil society groups. Together, they work across borders to raise awareness and encourage action for soil preservation, empowering local communities to engage in soil protection and restoration efforts through creative and innovative solutions.
SOILTRIBES offers financial support for collaborative initiatives that integrate science, art, and community involvement. The project funds a variety of activities such as creative campaigns, participatory events, and educational workshops that bring together citizens, artists, and experts to co-create knowledge and promote soil-friendly practices. Key outcomes of the project include the development of new resources for public engagement, increased soil awareness, and the promotion of sustainable agricultural techniques. The main practical recommendation is to adopt participatory methodologies that combine scientific research with artistic expression to effectively engage and mobilize local communities. This approach will lead to long-term positive impacts on soil health and sustainability, fostering collective responsibility for the environment.
