Objectives

The main aim of INGEST-SOIL is the reduction of soil erosion in hillslope vineyards in Piedmont, improving soil and vine quality by means the introduction of three main innovations: 1) Improved best soil management practices 2) Agro-meteorological monitoring, to improve water and soil management 3) ICT tools for managing of monitored data and field observation to support farmer in vineyard management and water-soil conservation. The OG includes research institutions, vine farmers, vine-growers and wine-makers associations, SMEs dealing with ICT for agriculture and technical services for agriculture. The project will carry out also dissemination and training activities at local scale.

Objectives

L’obiettivo del progetto IN-GEST SOIL è quello di promuovere negli ambienti vitivinicoli collinari innovazioni che permettono di contenere i tipici fenomeni di degrado del suolo quali erosione e compattamento e di mantenere, se non migliorare, la qualità e quantità della produzione, attraverso: 1) ottimizzazione ed introduzione di buone pratiche di gestione del suolo; 2) introduzione pratiche di monitoraggio agrometeorologico; 3) introduzione di specifici sistemi di supporto alle decisioni per la programmazione delle attività in vigneto. Ulteriore obiettivo del progetto è la divulgazione a livello locale delle buone pratiche individuate.

Activities

In order to improve the soil and vine quality in Piedmon, and reduce soil erosion risk, the project IN-GEST SOIL will adapt and introduce some innovations, by means of following actions: 1) definition and improvement of best soil management practices, throughout partecipative process involving also farmers that are not included in the OG; 2) introduction of good practices in some vine farms and use of innovative monitoring tools to demonstrate their effectiveness and support vine farmers in soil/vineyard management; 3) The project will carry out also dissemination and training activities at local scale throughout the sharing of a "good practices chart" and at national/european level.

Le attività del progetto IN-GEST SOIL per l'adeguamento ed introduzione delle innovazioni volte a limitare il degrado del suolo, in particolare l'erosione, prevedono: 1) definizione delle pratiche conservative del suolo da adottare attraverso un processo cooperativo all'interno del GO e con coinvolgimento di altre aziende; 2) introduzione delle pratiche innovative in parcelle di prova ed introduzione di monitoraggio per verificarne l'efficacia e per supportare i vitcoltori nelle decisioni relative alla gestione del suolo; 3) azioni formative/ divulgative con realizzazione di una "carta delle buone pratiche" e a livello locale/nazionale/europeo

Context

IN-GEST SOIL is an experimental development project aimed at transferring the results deriving from the research activities conducted by the lead partner Agrion (Experimental Center for Vitiviniculture of Carpeneto) and by the CNR-STEMS on the theme of soil protection in the vineyard into the company practice. The project intends to directly address the prevention of soil erosion, a phenomenon to which the vast sloping areas of the Piedmont area dedicated to the cultivation of vines are particularly subject. To respond to these problems, in line with the EU Soil Thematic Strategy, it is proposed to adapt and adopt, in the management of the vineyard soil, alternative solutions to those generally used in the reference areas of the GO. In fact, in these areas most of the vineyards have conditions of high risk of erosion. The companies potentially involved in the project are numerous, considering that over 95% of the surface of the vineyards of the Piedmont Region is located in hilly areas. The introduction of the innovations provides for an adaptation path by agricultural entrepreneurs as regards the strategies to be implemented in the management of the inter-row, as well as the collaboration with technicians and researchers in the monitoring and prevention of soil degradation phenomena, which will allow to increase knowledge and awareness of these issues, as well as verify the effects on the production and soil quality of the practices adopted. 3 Practice Abstracts

Introduction of a Decision Support System (DSS) order to support vine growers in the management of field activities, taking in account also best conditions for soil protection.

The DSS, available also in mobile version, will allow the managing of monitoring data and farmer observation to support farmers in optimizing vineyard management and water-soil conservation. It will include as main functions:

view of agro-meteorological data from field sensors;

registration of field observation and operations;

provide output from models related to pest diseases and soil conditions

provide alerts for critical conditions for vine treatments and soil operations.

Introduzione dell’uso di un DSS per il supporto alla gestione ottimale del vigneto e delle sue risorse. Il DSS, utilizzabile anche tramite dispositivi mobili, integra i dati di monitoraggio agro-meteorologico in campo, la registrazione di operazioni ed osservazioni in campo per fornire indicazioni e supporto alle decisioni aziendali ed è utilizzabile da viticoltori e tecnici per:

- consultare i dati meteorologici registrati dai sensori meteo

- inserire osservazioni di campo

-inserire trattamenti e concimazioni che possono essere influenzate e influire sui fenomeni di degrado del suolo collegati con l’erosione

- visualizzare i risultati di modelli previsionali relativamente a fitopatologie e condizioni del suolo

- fornire indicazioni per trattamenti ed operazioni in campo.





 

Introduction of monitoring of (i) soil quality/degradation (ii) agro-meterological and hydrological variables and (iii) vine’s development and production, in order to assess the effects of the introduced soil/cover management practices, on soil quality and protection and on vine quality and yields and to support vine growers in their adoption.

Adozione di metodi e sistemi di monitoraggio (i) dello stato del suolo, (ii) di dati agro-meteorologici ed idrologici e (iii) dello sviluppo e produttività della vite, al fine di ottimizzare e monitorare l’efficacia dell’adozione di diverse pratiche di gestione del suolo introdotte in vigneto.



 

Improvement and introduction of best soil management practices in hillslope vineyards, in order to prevent soil degradation, especially soil erosion by water, evaluating the effects on ecosystem services and vine production. The best soil management practices will be identified, adapted for each vine farms partecipating to the OG, based on knowledge and expertise of researchers, winegrowers, technician and producer’s associations, in order to adapt them to each farm and production area.

Introduzione di pratiche di gestione del suolo del vigneto efficaci nel limitare il degrado del suolo, in particolare rispetto ai fenomeni di erosione idrica, valutandone gli effetti dal punto di vista produttivo (qualitativo e quantitativo), ed il miglioramento dei vari servizi ecosistemici del vigneto. L’individuazione e l’applicazione delle pratiche di gestione del suolo è basata sull’esperienza pregressa, partendo dai risultati di ricerche condotte in Piemonte e tiene conto della realtà aziendale e produttiva del territorio, grazie alla partecipazione di ricercatori, tecnici, viticoltori, associazioni del settore.
