Objectives
White squill (Drima Maritima) is a perennial herb that is native to the Mediterranean region. Squill contains several steroid glycosides (Bufadienolides) which are key compounds in many anti-cough syrups. The 18-month project proposes to trial the growing of Squill on North Wales farms. The aim is to establish the demands of the plant including agronomy, harvesting and extraction techniques and their costs of growing the plant in Wales. If results are positive, it is possible that growing Squill could be a diversification option for some farmers who are currently struggling with the challenges of the beef and sheep sector. Welsh grown could replace the current production supply from overseas.

Mae Serenyn yn cynnwys nifer o lycosid steroid (Bufadienolides) sy'n gyfansoddion allweddol mewn llawer o foddion peswch. Mae'r prosiect 18 mis yn bwriadu treialu tyfu Serenyn ar ffermydd yng Ngogledd Cymru. Y nod yw sefydlu gofynion y planhigyn yng Nghymru. Os yw'r canlyniadau'n bositif, mae'n bosib y gallai tyfu Serenyn fod yn opsiwn o arallgyfeirio i rai ffermwyr sydd eisoes yn wynebu’r heria'r sector defaid a chig eidion. Gallai Serenyn wedi ei dyfu yng Nghymru gymryd lle'r cyflenwad cynhyrchu presennol o wledydd tramor.
Activities
200kg of Squill bulbs will be planted on multiple trial plots throughout North Wales, all with altering terrain, altitude, pH, and agronomy.
1) Growing - Plant trial plots of Squill at a range of locations across North Wales.
2) Production - Investigate ways of harvesting and processing Squill for isolating the bioactive target compounds.
3) Agronomy - Establish data and analysis from the growing trials.
4) Market Evaluation - Identify suitable markets for the bio actives.
5) Business Model - Develop and evaluate a financial model of the business opportunity.
Activities
Bydd 200kg o fylbiau Serenyn yn cael eu plannu ar nifer o leiniau arbrawf ar draws Gogledd Cymru gyda thirwedd, uchder, pH ac agronomeg amrywiol.
1) Tyfu – Plannu lleiniau arbrofol o Serenyn mewn nifer o leoliadau ar draws gogledd Cymru.
2) Cynhyrchu – Ymchwilio ffyrdd o gynaeafu a phrosesu Serenyn gan geisio darganfod methodoleg o brosesu ar raddfa ar gyfer gwahanu’r cyfansoddion bioactif a dargedwyd.
3) Agronomeg - Canfod data a dadansoddiad o’r arbrofion tyfu
4) Gwerthuso Marchnad a Model Busnes - Canfod marchnadoedd addas ar gyfer y cyfansoddion bioactif a ganfyddir ac a wahanir.
5) Model Busnes – Datblygu model ariannol er mwyn gwerthuso’r cyfleoedd busnes.

White squill (Drima Maritima) is a perennial herb that is native to the Mediterranean region. The bulbous portion of the base, which is pear-shaped and about the size of a fist, contains several steroid glycosides (Bufadienolides) which are key compounds in many anti-cough syrups. In recent years, the plant has been subject to severe uprooting and collection for pharmaceutical companies, and Bufadienolide is becoming rarer with increasing demand.
Recent small scale research has shown that this specific variety of Squill can be grown in Gwynedd and has been proven to contain twice the active constituents than the varieties produced overseas. Five farmers, located in Gwynedd, Denbigh and south Powys are involved in the 18 month project that will investigate the ability to grow Squill in Wales. The aim is to understand the optimum agronomy and location for growth as well as harvesting and extraction techniques. 200kg of Squill bulbs will be planted on multiple trial plots throughout North Wales, all with altering terrain, altitude, pH, and agronomy.
If results are positive, it is possible that growing Squill could be a diversification option for some farmers who are currently struggling with the challenges of the beef and sheep sector. Welsh grown squill could offer Welsh upland farmers an additional diverse income stream by replacing the current production supply from Mediterranean countries.
