Context
The milk price of the past few months shows once again how important it is for the efficient management of each individual farm to know its strengths and weaknesses. However, presently there are hardly any opportunities for farmers to have the economic soundness and nutrient efficiency of dairy cows analysed for individual animals. Especially the use of data merged from different sources is often very difficult. Computer programmes which enable comparable evaluations are in most cases expensive and have to be installed locally. Moreover, in many cases all parameters need to be entered manually and the analysis of the data always covers but one component of the agricultural production. To enable significantly simpler and more efficient planning, for example of saving opportunities in dairy farms, the web application “Efficiency check” is developed.
Objectives
The objective is to develop a modern and practical web application which helps dairy farmers take targeted measures to improve the economic and nutrient efficiency in milk production on farm and animal level. In the long run, the data collected also help achieve improvements in the breeding of animals, making them healthier due to more sparing drug application, nutrient and production efficiency.
The main target group of the project comprises dairy farms and veterinaries, but also extension services and the teaching sector can draw benefit from the results.
Objectives
Ziel ist die Entwicklung einer modernen und praxisgerechten Web-Anwendung, die Milchbauern dabei unterstützt, gezielt Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung der ökonomischen als auch nährstoffbezogenen Effizienz auf Betriebs- und Tierebene in der Milchproduktion zu setzen. Langfristig dienen die gesammelten Daten auch der züchterischen Verbesserung von Tiergesundheit, durch Reduktion des Medikamenteneinsatzes, Nährstoff- und Produktionseffizienz.
Hauptzielgruppe des Projekts sind Milchbetriebe und Tierärztinnen und Tierärzte, aber auch Beratung und Lehre können von den Ergebnissen profitieren.
Activities
The Operational Group consists of practitioners, extension workers and researchers. The lead-partner is the Association of Austrian Cattle Breeders (ZAR). In the fields of research and programming also external service providers are involved in the project. The centerpiece of the project is the execution of a pilot project on trial farms for the participatory development of the web application. Through close interaction between farmers, vets from practical life, extension workers and the project team the evaluations and presentations of the web application are to be adjusted to the needs and requirements of agricultural holdings with different conditions of production.
Activities
Die Operationelle Gruppe setzt sich aus Vertreterinnen und Vertretern aus Praxis, Beratung und Forschung zusammen. Leadpartner ist die Zentrale Arbeitsgemeinschaft Österreichischer Rinderzüchter (ZAR). Des Weiteren sind im Bereich der Forschung und Programmierung auch externe Dienstleister eingebunden. Im Mittelpunkt des Projekts steht die Durchführung eines Pilotprojekts zur partizipativen Entwicklung der Web-Anwendung. Durch eine enge Interaktion zwischen allen Zielgruppen und dem Projektteam soll die Web-Anwendung auf die Bedürfnisse und Anforderungen von landwirtschaftlichen Betrieben mit unterschiedlichen Produktionsbedingungen abgestimmt werden.

3 Practice Abstracts
The basic idea behind the web application is to offer the farmers additional evaluations of the profitability of each individual cow on the farm without any additional work. The basis for this is provided by the data already stored in the cattle data network (RDV) from performance testing, breeding value estimation and health monitoring.
The following informations are taken into account:
Revenues / income: milk gain, live born calves, animal sales and slaughter revenues
Costs / expenditures: stock replacement, feed costs, costs for artificial insemination and health costs (including average veterinarian costs, costs for milk loss due to waiting times and decline in performance, as well as working time)
In addition to a detailed comparison of individual animals and farms, evaluations of udder health and milking hygiene as well as some graphic analysis tools are also available.
Der Grundgedanke der Web-Anwendung besteht darin, den Bäuerinnen und Bauern möglichst ohne weiteren Arbeitsaufwand zusätzliche Auswertungen zur Wirtschaftlichkeit jeder einzelnen Kuh am Betrieb anzubieten. Die Grundlage hierfür bieten die ohnehin bereits im Rinderdatenverbund (RDV) gespeicherten Daten aus Leistungsprüfung, Zuchtwertschätzung und Gesundheitsmonitoring.
Folgende Informationen werden bei den angebotenen Auswertungen berücksichtigt:
Erlöse bzw. Einnahmen: Milcherlös, lebend geborene Kälber und Tierverkauf bzw. Schlachterlös
Kosten bzw. Ausgaben: Bestandsergänzung bzw. Tierzukauf, Futterkosten, Belegungskosten und Gesundheitskosten (inkl. durchschnittlicher Tierarztkosten, Kosten für Milchentgang aufgrund von Wartezeiten und Leistungsrückgang sowie Arbeitszeit)
Neben einem detaillierten Einzeltiervergleich und Betriebsvergleich stehen auch noch Auswertungen zur Eutergesundheit und Melkhygiene sowie einige grafische Analysetools zur Verfügung.
Within the EIP-AGRI project “Efficiency Check”, it was possible to develop an intuitive web application for farmers to analyse their own dairy herds. The WEB application also enables comparison with other farms and provides tips for optimization.
In addition to the objectively end product - the web application - valuable findings from and for farmers were also collected, as well as scientifically analyzes of the relationship between housing conditions, animal health and the performance potential of dairy cows in Austria get done.
With the collection and linking of existing and newly generated knowledge, a tool was created that supports farmers in their daily work and provides them new knowledge about their farms, if possible without additional recording effort.
Since the beginning of 2020, the web application “Efficiency Check” has been available free of charge to all dairy cattle farms under performance control - that are currently over 19,000 farms - in the so called RDV portal.
Im Rahmen des EIP-AGRI - Projektes „Effizienz-Check“ ist es gelungen, eine ansprechende und intuitive Web-Anwendung für Praktikerinnen und Praktiker speziell zur Analyse der eigenen Milchviehherde zu entwickeln. Die Web-Anwendung ermöglicht aber auch den Vergleich mit anderen Betrieben und gibt Hinweise auf Optimierungspotential am Betrieb.
Neben dem tatsächlichen „Endprodukt“ – der Web-Anwendung – wurden aber auch wertvolle Erkenntnisse aus und für die Praxis gesammelt, sowie wissenschaftlich fundierte Analysen über den Zusammenhang zwischen Haltungsbedingungen, Tiergesundheit und Leistungspotential von Milchkühen in Österreich durchgeführt.
Mit der Sammlung und Verknüpfung von bestehendem und neu generiertem Wissen wurde so ein Werkzeug geschaffen, das Bäuerinnen und Bauern bei ihrer täglichen Arbeit unterstützt und möglichst ohne zusätzlichen Aufzeichnungsaufwand neue Erkenntnisse über ihren Betrieb ermöglicht.
Seit Anfang 2020 steht die Web-Anwendung „Effizienz-Check“ allen landwirtschaftlichen Milchrinderbetrieben unter Leistungskontrolle – das sind derzeit über 19.000 Betriebe – gratis im RDV-Portal zur Verfügung.
Within the EIP-AGRI project "Efficiency Check", a modern and practical web application was developed to support dairy farmers in taking targeted measures to improve the economic and nutrient-related efficiency of milk production. By visualizing the relationships between management measures, husbandry conditions, animal health and diseases and their economic effects, the aim is to increase farm managers' awareness of animal welfare and health.
The WEB application "Efficiency Check" comprises three central tasks:
1. Comparison of the profitability of all dairy cows on the farm, taking into account revenues from milk, meat and calves as well as costs due to feeding, husbandry, fertility, diseases and their consequences
2. Analysis of the own farm and comparison with other farms.
3. Pointing out potentials for optimizing operations, especially in the field of udder health, and creating new advisory options by providing the WEB application for veterinarians and consultants.
Im Rahmen des EIP-AGRI – Projekts „Effizienz-Check“ wurde eine moderne und praxisgerechte Web-Anwendung entwickelt, die Milchbäuerinnen und –bauern dabei unterstützt, gezielt Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung der ökonomischen als auch nährstoffbezogenen Effizienz in der Milchproduktion zu setzen. Durch die Visualisierung der Zusammenhänge von Managementmaßnahmen, Haltungsbedingungen, Tiergesundheit und Krankheiten und deren ökonomischen Auswirkungen soll das Bewusstsein der Betriebsleiter für Tierwohl und –gesundheit gestärkt werden.
Die WEB-Anwendung „Effizienz-Check“ umfasst drei zentrale Aufgaben:
1. Vergleich der Wirtschaftlichkeit aller Milchkühe am Betrieb unter Berücksichtigung von Erlösen aus Milch, Fleisch und Kälbern sowie Kosten aufgrund von Fütterung, Haltung, Fruchtbarkeit, Krankheiten und deren Folgen.
2. Analyse des eigenen Betriebes und Vergleich mit anderen Betrieben.
3. Aufzeigen von Potentialen zur Betriebsoptimierung speziell im Bereich Eutergesundheit und Schaffung neuer Beratungsmöglichkeiten durch die Bereitstellung der WEB-Anwendung auch für Tierärztinnen, Tierärzten, Beraterinnen und Berater.
