Context

Direct sales to consumers or businesses enables producers to get a higher price for their products than if they would sell through wholesalers. But the additional administrative and logistical costs are often high and limits producers’ ability to improve profitability.

Our objective is to develop an e-commerce platform that will enable producers to reduce the administrative cost and improve the logistical efficiency for direct sales of produce. The platform will support both retail and wholesale customers and the system will simplify and automate the entire sales process from inventory management, order capturing and fulfillment to delivery, payments, accounting, reporting and planning. The system can be used by individual producers or groups of producers, such as online or physical farmers markets, to receive online orders and to coordinate fulfillment and deliveries to wholesale and retail customers. The integrated POS will allow producers to capture all their sales data to one system, including sales to wholesale and retail customers done at markets and at farm stands.
