Objectives
Chemical disinfectants are a key hygiene measure when cultivating mushrooms. By using them to disinfect equipment and installations, farmers can minimise the risk of crop losses due to infections by fungal, bacterial or viral pathogens. The treatment’s success relies on many factors and there is a wide range of products available in the market, so the MustTV project has elaborated a factsheet for growers to help them decide on the right treatment. Additional information
Some of the recommendations are:
* Avoid damaging yourself, the wildlife or the equipment by using proper personal equipment and following the instructions about application and maintenance of the product (e.g. certain disinfectants may degrade cans over time).
* Some factors such as temperature, pH or water hardness may influence the results (e.g. aldehydes are temperature dependant).
* The presence of organic matter may lower the efficacy of some chemicals (e.g. chlorine based), so clean the surfaces before treating them.
* Few disinfectants, like silver compound, leave residues over the treated surface, hence avoid them if possible.
* As some chemicals are corrosive (e.g. chlorine based), machinery may require different products than surfaces of plastic or concrete.
* It is not possible to rely solely on disinfectants. Cleaning and other hygiene measures still remain important to keep these diseases under control.
* Check your country regulations concerning allowed treatments.
* Find specific information for Agaricus bisporus and Thrichoderma aggressivum (green mould) in the relevant chapter of the factsheet.
All information compiled is based on label specifications of the disinfectants, so to avoid undesirable effects, farmers should carefully read the label of the product before using it.
