Control of black root rot in lamb’s lettuce

Objectives
Black root rot, caused by Berkeleyomyces rouxiae and Berkeleyomyces basicola is a growing problem in as many as 60% of Flemish lamb’s lettuce growers in recent years. There is an urgent demand for more information/knowledge on this disease and sustainable control strategies throughout cultivation. The main objective is to be able to provide growers with sound advice to prevent and, if present, remedy black root rot in lamb’s lettuce. To achieve this goal, a systems approach will be used and different aspects (identification pathogen(s), incidence and control strategies) of this disease will be identified, and investigated.
Objectives
Zwart wortelrot, veroorzaakt door Berkeleyomyces rouxiae en Berkeleyomyces basicola is de laatste jaren een probleem bij meer dan 60% van de Vlaamse veldsla telers. De hoofddoelstelling is om de telers een degelijk advies te kunnen geven om zwart wortelrot in veldsla te voorkomen en indien aanwezig, te remediëren. Om dit doel te bereiken zal een systeembenadering gebruikt worden en zullen verschillende aspecten (identificatie pathoge(e)n(en), incidentie en beheersingsstrategieën) van deze ziekte in kaart gebracht en onderzocht worden. De verschillende acties zullen ons cruciale inzichten opleveren die onder praktijkomstandigheden zullen getoetst worden.
Activities
In a first part knowledge building is done on the distribution of Berkeleyomyces spp. and an inventory of field conditions. A second sub-action includes the formulation of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy for the control of black root rot taking into account the objectives of the Green Deal. In a last part, co-creation is aimed at maximum knowledge absorption by growers to apply the acquired know-how in practice. The above results will finally lead to a guide on the measures to be taken to control black root rot in a sustainable way and thus enable year-round production of lamb’s lettuce.
Activities
De aanpak van het project bestaat uit drie delen. Een eerste deel omvat de kennisopbouw over de verspreiding van Berkeleyomyces spp.. Een inventarisatie en identificatie van de aanwezige pathogenen bij de veldslatelers is dus onontbeerlijk om een adequate beheersingsstrategie op te stellen. Een tweede deelactie omvat het opstellen van een IPM gebaseerde strategie voor de beheersing van zwart wortelrot rekening houdende met de doelstellingen van de Green Deal. In een laatste deel wordt a.d.h.v. co-creatie gestreefd naar een maximale kennisabsorptie bij de telers om de verworven know-how in de praktijk toe te passen.
