Context

Faced with the environmental and social consequences of the prevailing agrifood model, it is necessary to seek new models that promote environmentally beneficial practices. At the international level, a decisive step has been taken towards the search for innovative alternatives that go deeper into how agroecology faces the challenges of global change and increasingly urbanised societies. In Spain, and in particular in the CM, it is a term with an increasing popularity in the productive sector, but it is still far from being recognized and there is a wide debate about its overlap with ecological agriculture.

Objectives

To amplify scientific knowledge about agroecology as a discipline and as a practice that contributes to the sustainability of agricultural activity; lastly assessing its current incidence and future viability as an integrated rural development strategy in the Community of Madrid.

Activities

1. Assess and enhance available knowledge about agroecological practices that contribute to environmental sustainability (through the maintenance of ecosystem services).
2. Production, deepening the current state of recognition of agroecology in the productive sector.
3. To broaden the knowledge and principles of agroecology to consumers, giving priority to local and seasonal products.
4. Deepen the development and negotiation of policies and incentives in CM that promote agroecological practices.

Additional information

● Explore the relationship between organic farming and agroecology and their possible complementarity
● Provide training to technicians and new producers in agroecology
● To improve the association and connection between different actors related to agroecology through annual meetings and dissemination documents.
● Increase the visibility of the sector, through organized visits, annual awards.
