Objectives

The main objective of the project is the adaptation of extensive crop management strategies to reduce the use of plant protection products by 50%, especially herbicides and fungicides. To do this, technical training about reducing the use of plant protection products is proposed for farmers and technicians, making agroecological practices and using new generation pesticides. In addition, an evaluation of technical, economic and social viability is carried out by means of demonstration field tests in extensive cereal crops without irrigation and in irrigated potatoes, using agroecological practices such as crop rotation, mechanical weeding or use of natural pesticides and plant biostimulants.

Objectives

El objetivo general del proyecto es adecuar estrategias de manejo de cultivos extensivos para reducir al 50% el uso de fitosanitarios, especialmente de herbicidas y fungicidas. Para ello, se plantea formación técnica para agricultores y técnicos en reducción del uso de fitosanitarios, compatibilizando prácticas agroecológicas y plaguicidas de nueva generación. Además, se realiza una evaluación de viabilidad técnica, económica y social mediante pruebas de campos demostrativos en cultivos extensivos de cereal en secano y patata en regadío utilizando prácticas agroecológicas como la rotación de cultivos, escarda mecánica, uso de plaguicidas naturales y bioestimulantes de las plantas.

Activities

The tasks of the project are divided into several phases:

1. Preparation of the agricultural itineraries in the farmers' fields and selection of representative fields of the agricultural area of ​​extensive crops in the region.

2. Execution of field tests and evaluation of weed control and diseases.

3. Analysis of the social structure of the agricultural sector in the region in reference to farms that include at least 50% of arable land dedicated to extensive crops.

4. Divulgation of the results obtained in the project to the producer sector in the region.

Activities

Las tareas del proyecto se dividen en varias fases:

1. Preparación de los itinerarios agrícolas en los campos de los agricultores y selección de parcelas representativas de la zonas agrícola de cultivos herbáceos extensivos de la región.

2. Ejecución de las pruebas de campo y evaluación del control de malas hierbas y enfermedades fúngicas.

3. Análisis de la estructura social del sector agrícola alavés en referencia a explotaciones que incluyan en al menos el 50% de tierra arable dedicada a cultivos extensivos herbáceos.

4. Difusión de los resultados obtenidos en el proyecto al sector productor de la región.

1 Practice Abstracts

All the farms with cereal crops could be able to introduce the alternative treatments proposed in the pilot test, being the irrigated farms the most professionalized and easier ones to adapt. Deep-rooted social and cultural reasons, coupled with the interests of input companies, make the shift from agricultural practices to sustainability and environmental friendliness slow.

In potato crop, fungicides have been reduced by 60%, insecticides by 20% and also mineral fertilizers, maintaining plant health. Production has been reduced by 20% of the weight of commercial size, without seeing differences in size, dry matter and post-harvest diseases between the conventional and the alternative MENOSFITOS treatments.

In cereal crop, insecticides and fungicides have been reduced by 100%, keeping 100% mineral fertilizers applied in winter so that production and quality are not affected.

Ozone products have been tested through potato irrigation. Also biological non-ecotoxic insecticides. The application of Agrozono has not reduced diseases in the crop or postharvest, nor changing production or size. Biological insecticides have shown their ability to control serious infestations of Agriotes lineatus, but in a lower level than conventional phytosanitary products associated with high levels of ecotoxicity.

Las explotaciones con cultivos de cereal podrían acogerse a los tratamientos alternativos propuestos en la prueba piloto, siendo las explotaciones con regadío las más profesionalizadas y con mayor facilidad para adaptarse. Las razones sociales y culturales de gran arraigo, junto con intereses comerciales de las empresas de insumos, hacen que el cambio de las prácticas agrícolas a las necesidades de sostenibilidad y respeto del medio ambiente sea lento.

En patata, se ha reducido un 60% los fungicidas, un 20% los insecticidas y los fertilizantes minerales, manteniendo la sanidad vegetal. La producción se ha visto reducida en 20% de peso de patata de calibre comercial, sin ver diferencias en calibre, materia seca y enfermedades postcosecha entre el itinerario convencional y el alternativo MENOSFITOS.

En cereal, se ha reducido un 100% los insecticidas y fungicidas, manteniendo el 100% de fertilizantes minerales aplicados en invierno para que la producción y calidad no se vean afectadas.

Se han probado productos de Ozono mediante el riego en patata e insecticidas biológicos, no ecotóxicos. La aplicación de Agrozono no ha reducido las enfermedades en cultivo ni en postcosecha, ni tampoco ha variado la producción ni el calibre. Los insecticidas biológicos han mostrado su capacidad para controlar infestaciones graves de alfilerillo de patata a niveles ligeramente inferiores a los fitosanitarios convencionales asociados a altos niveles de ecotoxicidad.
