Objectives

The aims of this study are to get better knowledge of the beekeeping sector in the Basque Country (Spain) and to evaluate the structural and key production variables affected by the invasion of Vespa velutina. The study will be conducted by different Beekeepers Associations, NEIKER, and the University of the Basque Country. Beekeepers will be asked to fill out a questionnaire. In summary, the study is aim to identify the strengths and current threats to beekeeping related to Vespa velutina. Furthermore, policies and recommendations on how to improve and support beekeeping activity will be find out.

Objectives

Los objetivos de este estudio son conocer mejor el sector apícola en el País Vasco (España) y evaluar los parámetros estructurales y de producción afectados por la invasión de Vespa velutina. El estudio será realizado por diferentes asociaciones de apicultores, NEIKER y la Universidad del País Vasco. A los apicultores se les pedirá que llenen un cuestionario. En resumen, el objetivo del estudio es identificar las fortalezas y amenazas actuales para la apicultura relacionadas con Vespa velutina. Además, se intentará revisar las políticas y recomendaciones sobre cómo mejorar y apoyar la actividad apícola.

A survey was designed in 2017 to compile the data corresponding to 2016. The experts conducted a pre-test to refine the questions and adapt the content of the questionnaire. The population surveyed were beekeepers from the three associations of the Basque Country: APIAL (Araba), GEE (Gipuzkoa) and BAMEPE (Bizkaia). The survey consisted of 31 questions grouped into 5 categories:

  • Characteristics of the beekeeper
  • Beekeeping activity
  • Impact of the arrival of the Asian wasp
  • Control measures used by beekeepers against the wasp
  • Impact on health

The questionnaires have been analyzed and discussed by the project team, and a final report has been completed.

Activities

Se diseñó una encuesta en 2017 para compilar los datos correspondientes a 2016. Los expertos realizaron una prueba previa para perfeccionar las preguntas y adaptar el contenido del cuestionario. La población encuestada eran apicultores de las tres asociaciones del País Vasco: APIAL (Araba), GEE (Gipuzkoa) y BAMEPE (Bizkaia). La encuesta consistió en 31 preguntas agrupadas en 5 categorías:

  • Características del apicultor
  • Actividad de apicultura
  • Impacto de la llegada de la avispa asiática
  • Medidas de control utilizadas por los apicultores contra la avispa
  • Impacto en la salud

Los cuestionarios han sido analizados y discutidos por el equipo del proyecto, y se ha completado un informe final.

1 Practice Abstracts

The aims of this collaborative project have been to improve the knowledge of the beekeeping sector in the Basque Country (BC) (Spain) and to evaluate the structural and key production parameters affected by the invasion of the Asian hornet - Vespa velutina. The study has been conducted by different Beekeepers Associations, NEIKER, and the University of the BC. Beekeepers were asked to fill out a questionnaire with the aim of identifying the strengths and current threats to beekeeping related to V. velutina. Furthermore, policies and recommendations on how to improve and support beekeeping activity were assessed. Briefly, a survey was designed in 2017 to compile data corresponding to 2016. Experts carried out a pre-test to refine questions and adapt the content of the questionnaire. The surveyed population were beekeepers from the 3 Beekeepers Associations of the BC who participated in the study. The survey consisted of 31 questions grouped into 5 categories: Beekeeper characteristics; Beekeeping activity; Impact from the arrival of the Asian hornet in the Basque Country; Control measures used by beekeepers against Asian hornet; and health impact. Questionnaires have been analysed and discussed by the project team, and a final report has been completed. This study has enabled different stakeholders to establish collaboration. This cooperation has given a first approach about the characteristics of the beekeeping sector in the BC, as well as an exploratory assessment of the impact of the arrival of the Asian hornet. In the future, new studies have to be done in order to improve current information about this invasive species in the BC. Additionally, it would be of interest to compare these results with those obtained in the rest of Spain and Europe.

Los objetivos de este proyecto de colaboración han sido mejorar el conocimiento del sector de la apicultura en el País Vasco (PV) (España) y evaluar los parámetros productivos clave afectados por la invasión de la avispa asiática - Vespa velutina. El estudio ha sido realizado por diferentes Asociaciones de Apicultores, NEIKER y la Universidad del País Vasco. Se pidió a los apicultores que completaran un cuestionario con el objetivo de identificar las fortalezas y las amenazas actuales para la apicultura relacionadas con V. velutina. Además, se evaluaron las políticas y recomendaciones sobre cómo mejorar y apoyar la actividad de la apicultura en relación a esta plaga. En resumen, se diseñó una encuesta en 2017 para recopilar los datos correspondientes a 2016. La población encuestada eran apicultores de las 3 asociaciones de apicultores del PV. La encuesta consistió de 31 preguntas agrupadas en 5 categorías: características del apicultor; Actividad y producción apícola; Impacto de la llegada de la avispa asiática en el País Vasco; Medidas de control utilizadas por los apicultores contra la avispa asiática; e impacto en la salud. Los cuestionarios fueron analizados y discutidos por el equipo del proyecto, y se ha realizado el informe final. Este estudio ha permitido a diferentes partes interesadas establecer una colaboración. Esta cooperación ha permitido tener una idea de las características del sector apícola en el PV, así como una idea preliminar del impacto de la llegada del avispón asiático. En el futuro, se deben realizar nuevos estudios para mejorar la información actual sobre esta especie invasora en el PV, y comparar los resultados con los del resto de España y Europa.
