Context

The directive 2009/128/EC establishes a framework to achieve a sustainable use of pesticides by reducing the risks and impacts of pesticide use on human health and the environment and promoting the use of integrated pest management and of alternative approaches or techniques such as non-chemical alternatives to pesticides. Through the proposed computer application in this project, growers would have an unbiased support to take a decision for phytosanitary applications for disease control in vineyard.

Objectives

The aim of the project is to develop a computer application to manage the sanitary state of the vineyard, which advice to grower and help him in taking decisions about the optimal timing for phytosanitary treatments, through:

  • Determining the optimal timing of applications for disease control through their modelling
  • Reducing applications, through the integration of information from vineyard obtained from sensors, observations, and notebooks of exploitation
  • Increasing the effectiveness in the control of diseases, through the development of an computer application, that report to the health status of its vineyards winemaker in real time, and even providing recommendations of the product to use.

Objectives

Activities

The project is developed in different phases.

The first intends to define the needs of the system: location of vineyard plots and characteristics, the environmental and climatic parameters and relevant historical data that will allow the system description, as well as the installation of the sensors (stations weather).

In the second phase, the models for predicting risk for downy and powdery mildews and botrytis diseases will be developed, through the collection of data of disease evolution in plots throughout the campaigns along the project.

And in the third phase the computer application and its validation will be developed.

Activities

Additional comments

Globally, at the end of the projet APPVID would contribute to:

  • Efficiently utilize resources: reducing the number of emissions in vineyard and promoting the production of grapes with a low charge of chemical compounds to control disease in vineyard.
  • Be resistant to climatic change, because this will bring as a consequence an evolution of  pests and diseases affecting vineyard. So it will be required an adaptation their management. The computer application for the management of grape diseases will evolve automatically with climatic and environmental changes.
  • Work in other production systems, always urging growers to the transition to organic production.
  • Improve the protection of the environment and mitigate climate change, through the reduction of inputs to the ecosystem.
  • Create and establish links between the wine-producing  and research sectors in order to transfer knowledge to adapt it in tools at the service of growers.

Additional information

The Real Decreto 1311/2012 (Spanish Normative), sets the framework for action to achieve a sustainable use of products plant protection. The use of a computer  application as a decision support tool for application of phytosanitary treatments on vineyard, will contribute to the reduction of them, as they will be applied only when risk apparition. Besides, this reduction will mean a reduction in discharges to the environment, and gases emanating inputs by the action of the engines, so it will contribute to environmental sustainability .

1 Practice Abstracts

To develop the project, we worked on 9 vineyard plots.

In Phase I of the project (Definition of system needs), 9 meteorological stations (Cesens®) were installed, one for each plot, with several sensors. These sensors facilitated the recording of air and ground temperature values, relative humidity, solar radiation, and wind direction and speed.

During Phase II (Disease Prediction Models), disease data for mildew, powdery mildew and botrytis diseases were collected. Male moth individuals of the Lobesia botrana cluster were also captured by specific hormone. The disease condition data were analyzed and a model for disease risk estimation in the vineyard was elaborated. In parallel, the tasks of hosting and integrating the different computer components that make up the system were carried out: meteorological data, risk estimation module, health treatment data recorded from field application, consultations on risks and the possibility of linking with the Workbook.

In Phase III the mobile application was developed: www.appvid.eus. This mobile application offers an answer about the risk of illness consulted that is used to make a decision about the application of a treatment for the control of the consulted disease (mildew, powdery mildew or botrytis).

The tool generated can contribute positively to the decrease in the number of phytosanitary applications in the vineyard, which entails a lower contribution of inputs in the environment.
