    Summary

    Mr. Peter Schavel is a young farmer from Slovakia. Motivated by his passion for horse riding, he established the ‘Schavel Ranch’ in 2016 with just six horses.  As his reputation grew, it became necessary for Peter to build more stalls and improve his riding facilities. A successful application for CAP business start-up aid for young farmers ensured that he was able to upgrade his offer and grow his business.

    Results

    Thanks to the new infrastructure, Mr Schavel was able to increase the number of horses from six to twenty-five and continue to develop and promote equestrian sports in Slovakia.

    Context

    Mr. Peter Schavel established the ‘Schavel Ranch’ with six horses and he gradually expanded his riding and stabling offer as his customer base grew. Acquiring more horses made it necessary for Peter to build more stalls and improve the riding facilities by building an indoor riding arena. This business expansion was made possible thanks to business start-up aid for young farmers from the CAP.

    Objectives

    The aim of this project was to construct an indoor riding arena and extra stalls, to increase the farm’s capacity to accommodate horses and to provide a year-round training offer to its customers.

    Activities

    The construction of nine new horse stabling boxes;

    The construction of an indoor riding arena (20x40 m) with a height 4 m and a mobile hay store (12x6 m);

    The creation of two workstations to support the delivery of riding and stabling services across the site.

    Main results

    Thanks to the new infrastructure, Mr Schavel was able to increase the number of horses from six to twenty-five and continue to develop and promote equestrian sports in Slovakia.

    The annual revenue of the business has increased by 35%.

    The number of visitors has doubled.

    Key lessons

    When there are good conditions and a professional approach, the interest of clients increases.  In this case, some clients are waiting for boxes to become available so they can join the Schavel Ranch and they are willing to travel 30-40 km to have their animals where they are well cared for and can be trained.

    “Determination, stamina, the right direction, dedication, and to find and look for equally dedicated people since horse breeding requires your dedication and attention every day, 365 days a year.”

    Peter Schavel
