Objectives

Each field has places with a different yield potential, eg rows adjacent to spraying paths, shady and different (eg drier) zones. Adjusting the planting distance to the yield potential in those places prevents yield reductions. Variable planting saves on expensive planting material and improves the quality, total yield and uniformity of the harvest.

Elk perceel heeft plaatsen met een afwijkende opbrengstpotentie, bv. rijen aangrenzend aan spuitpaden, schaduwrijke en afwijkende (bv. drogere) zones. Het op die plaatsen aanpassen van de plantafstand aan de opbrengstpotentie voorkomt opbrengstverminderingen. Door variabel te poten wordt bespaard op duur pootgoed en verbeteren de kwaliteit, totale opbrengst en uniformiteit van de oogst.

2 Practice Abstracts

The reasons for variable planting can be diverse. At first a farmer can improve the quality and uniformity of the harvest. Another reason to vary distances is to save on costs of seed potatoes and finally increase the return. Some of the farmers / contractors have bought  a planting machine in which variable planting is possible (to be set by plant element). Often, however, all possibilities are not yet used  and so not all the benefits are exploited. For these growers accompaniment for this easy application of variable planting is desirable. This can be done by supporting them while planting with different planting distances and to make the necessary observations during and after the growing season. Of each company the costs and beneftis of variable planting can be observed.  For the many farmers / contractors who don't use variable planting, there will be a lot of (new) information available and demonstrations will be organised. This way farmers and contractors can determine the capabilities and advantages for  their own company.

Door variabel aardappelen te poten hoopt een teler om enerzijds de kwaliteit en uniformiteit van de uiteindelijke opbrengst te kunnen verbeteren en anderzijds duur pootgoed te kunnen besparen. Een aantal telers/loonwerkers hebben een plantmachine aangekocht waarbij variabel poten mogelijk is (in te stellen per plantelement). Vaak wordt deze echter nog niet maximaal ingezet en worden dus niet alle voordelen benut. Voor deze telers is begeleiding voor deze makkelijke toepassing van variabel poten wenselijk. Dit kan onder andere door hen bij het planten individueel te begeleiden, verschillende plantafstanden aan te leggen en de nodige waarnemingen tijdens en na de teelt te doen. Per bedrijf kan hieruit dan bekeken worden wat de kosten en de baten zijn van het variabel poten. Voor de vele telers/loonwerkers die nog niet variabel kunnen planten zal er tijdens de loop van deze operationele groep heel wat informatie beschikbaar komen en enkele demomomenten georganiseerd worden. Op die manier kunnen meerdere telers/loonwerkers nagaan over de mogelijkheden en voordelen op hun eigen bedrijf.

The underlying motive or measurements to adjust the planting distance can be diverse. We can adjust planting distance according to different soil types or variable EC zones within the field. The presence of shady areas on a field can also be a reason to plant potatoes wider in these zones. Thirdly, the planting distance can be adjusted in spraying lanes.
Our research focused on the possibilities to decrease the planting distance in the spraying lanes and the rows adjacent to these lanes. Most trials showed that, in the variety Fontane, variable planting in and beside the spraying lanes indeed led to a higher yield. The differences with respect to the full field planted with the standard density, remained small. However, it was not clear whether 10 or 20% narrower planting in and beside the spraying lanes was the best distance. Therefore further investigation is needed. The ideal variation in planting distance will vary from variety to variety. So the variety Innovator had a difficult time in the dry, warm growing season of 2018. As a result, the plants in the rows adjacent to an empty row couldn’t provide a lot of additional yield. Spraying lanes causes no extra debris.
Because the rows adjacent to an empty planting row get more light, water and nutrients, we expect that there is a greater yield potential in those rows. This extra yield compensates already for a part for the empty plant rows (in the spraying lanes). By planting closer these empty rows compensated some additional (but not completely). For both Fontane as Innovator the extra yield compensated in each case de larger cost for seed potatoes (caused by planting closer).

De redenen om variabel aardappelen te poten zijn divers. We kunnen de plantafstanden aanpassen naargelang de verschillende grondsoorten op één veld of zones met verschillende EC binnen het veld. De aanwezigheid van schaduwzones in een veld kan ook een reden zijn om aardappelen wijder te planten in deze zones. Als derde reden kan de plantafstand aangepast worden in en naast rijpaden.
Ons onderzoek focuste zich vooral op de mogelijkheden om de plantafstand in en naast de rijpaden te verminderen. Op de meeste proefvelden bleek dat, voor het ras Fontane, variabel poten naast en in de rijpaden wel degelijk zorgde voor een hogere opbrengst. De verschillen t.o.v. het volledige veld poten aan de standaard densiteit, bleven wel klein. Het was echter niet duidelijk of 10 of 20% nauwer poten in en naast de rijpaden de beste afstand was. Hiervoor is verder onderzoek nodig. De ideale variatie in pootafstand zal ook verschillen van ras tot ras. Zo had het ras Innovator het nogal moeilijk in het droge, warme groeiseizoen van 2018. Hierdoor konden de planten in de rijen grenzend aan een lege rij niet veel extra opbrengst geven. Rijpaden zorgen in elk geval niet voor extra uitval.
Doordat de rijen grenzend aan een lege plantrij meer licht, water en nutriënten krijgen, mogen we verwachten dat daar een groter opbrengstpotentieel zit. Deze extra opbrengst compenseert al een deel voor de lege plantrijen (in de rijpaden). Door nauwer te poten werden deze lege rijen nog iets extra gecompenseerd (maar nooit helemaal). Voor zowel Fontane als Innovator  compenseert de extra opbrengst in elk geval de grotere pootgoedkost (door nauwer te poten).
