Context

The aim of the research is to:

  • gain insight into critical bulk density values related to soil funtions;
  • validate the RhoC sensor in various soil types;
  • inventory and visualize (map) the current bulk density in various soil types.

Activities

The work packages deliver the following products:

WP1 Critical limits:

  • Literature review (report) on critical limits of bulk density values related to soil functions

WP2 RhoC sensor validation:

  • Validated method for in situ measurement of bulk density with the RhoC sensor in different soil types
  • Recommendations and implementation of improvements to the RhoC sensor for practical use by advisers and agricultural entrepreneurs

WP3 Comprehensive soil maps:

  • Report on the use of remote sensing data in combination with bulk density measurements for comprehensive map making
  • Method description for making comprehensive maps of bulk density
  • Cover maps of current soil bulk density and critical values with associated unreliability at field and regional level in the Province Flevoland
  • New data for existing decision support tools used by farmers and advisors


Activities

De werkpakketten leveren de volgende producten op:

WP1 Kritische grenswaarden:

- Literatuurstudie (rapport) naar kritische grenswaarden van bulkdichtheid

WP2 Validatie RhoC-sensor:

- Gevalideerde methode voor het in situ meten van de bulkdichtheid met de RhoC-sensor in de grondsoorten van Flevoland

- Aanbevelingen en implementatie van verbeteringen van de RhoC-sensor voor het gebruik in de praktijk door adviseurs en agrarische ondernemers

WP3 Vlakdekkende kaarten

- Verslag over gebruik van remote sensing data in combinatie met bulkdichtheidsmetingen voor het maken van vlakdekkende kaarten

- Methodebeschrijving voor het maken van vlakdekkende kaarten van de bulkdichtheid

- Vlakdekkende kaarten van de actuele bulkdichtheid en kritische grenswaarde met bijbehorende onbetrouwbaarheid op perceels- en regioniveau in Flevoland

- Inbreng van geschatte bodemdata binnen bestaande tools als OBI, Bodemmaatlat en het BBWP (in kind bijdrage door NMI)


Kennisdisseminatie zal plaatsvinden het bedrijfsleven, overheden, het onderwijs en via nieuwsberichten en artikelen in vakbladen zoals beschreven in hoofdstuk 3J van het projectplan. Hierbij worden de communicatievoorschriften van de EU in acht genomen.

1 Practice Abstracts

Soil compaction in the subsoil due to the use of heavy agricultural machinery occurs on approximately half of the fields in the Provence Flevoland (Netherlands) and can hinder soil ecosystem services, such as primary production, water regulation, water quality (leaching and runoff of nutrients and crop protection products), carbon storage, and soil biodiversity. Until now, it has been very difficult to measure soil bulk density. As a result, there is a lack of insight into the severity of the situation and necessary measures to combat soil compaction may remain unused. In this project, a new measurement method using the RhoC-sensor is being validated and used for rapid and accurate measurement, monitoring, and mapping of the bulk density in Flevoland soils to a depth of 1 meter. Based on the results, farmers can adapt their soil management accordingly.

Bodemverdichting (in zekere mate) in de ondergrond door gebruik van zware landbouwmachines speelt op circa de helft van de Flevolandse percelen en kan belemmerend zijn voor bodem-ecosysteemdiensten, zoals productiecapaciteit, waterbergend vermogen, waterkwaliteit (af- en uitspoeling van nutriënten en gewasbeschermingsmiddelen), koolstofopslag en de bodembiodiversiteit. Tot op heden is het zeer lastig om de dichtheid van de bodem te meten, waardoor inzicht in de ernst van de situatie ontbreekt en noodzakelijke maatregelen om bodemverdichting tegen te gaan mogelijk onbenut blijven. In dit project wordt een nieuwe meetmethode met de RhoC-sensor praktijkrijp gemaakt voor het (sneller en betrouwbaarder) meten, monitoren en karteren van de bulkdichtheid tot 1 meter diepte van Flevolandse bodems, op basis waarvan agrariërs hun bedrijfsvoering adequaat kunnen aanpassen.
