STAR accelerated lambing system
Sistemul de fătări accelerate STAR
5 lamb crops / ewe /3 years, this system was developed by Cornell University and is known as the STAR system. The calendar year is divided into five segments that each represent 73 days intervals. There are five mating periods in each year. There are at all times three groups in the flock: breeding and pregnant ewes and the rams, lambing and/or lactating ewes and their lambs, and growing lambs. These three groups are kept and managed separately. The STAR system is a natural system that does not use hormones or light control to achieve out-of-season breeding. It involves selecting sheep that breed during any season of the year (e.g. Merino derived strains, Dorset Horn, East Friesian, Finnish Landrace, hair breeds such as Dorper) and use of feed inputs higher by 10-20%, compared to conventional systems (e.g. for flushing and maintaining BCS in the flock).
Există cinci sezoane de montă per an.
