Comb management of honey frames after extraction
Proper post-extraction comb management determines the sanitary quality of stored combs and the health of colonies in subsequent seasons. Freshly extracted frames retain residual honey, pollen, and moisture that attract wax moths and support microbial growth. The standard first step is returning frames to the originating colony for bees to clean, dry, and repair wax damage before combs are retrieved for storage.
Combs must then be stored in conditions that prevent wax moth infestation, mould, and accumulation of chemical residues. Effective methods include cold storage, freezing at −18 to −20°C for 2–48 h (killing most wax moth life stages), and treatment with 80% acetic acid vapour (effective also against Nosema spores). Combs are stored in dry, ventilated, dark premises in stacked supers with mesh screens to allow air circulation.
Old, darkened brood combs accumulate acaricide residues, pathogen spores, and successive layers of pupal casings that progressively narrow cell diameter. Systematic comb retirement and melting is therefore an integral part of long-term biosecurity. Combs from colonies with confirmed or suspected American foulbrood must never be reused and must be destroyed immediately.
