Contexte
The project will help industry by developing partnerships between producers/farmers and forestry companies and contractors. If successful there is the potential opening of a new market for large scale commercial chipping contractors, local government and other landowners e.g. utility companies. Value chain analysis will identify whether this is potentially a viable additional market for woodchip producers and if so what factors influence this (location, volume, other sales etc.).
Objectives
Specific objectives include:
1. Determine whether applying woodchip (composted and un-composted) is beneficial to soil health and structure, and in which agricultural systems this method is most useful
2. Identify an efficient methodology to produce woodchip from hedgerows and other woody elements on farms and apply the material to soil; including a comparison of self-supply versus bought-in material
3. Produce guidelines for farmers on optimum application rates, time of application, stage in a rotation, species of tree, size of chip etc.

Activities
Trials will take place on three farms ranging from a small scale organic horticultural unit to a large conventional arable farm and a research agroforestry farm with both horticulture and arable cropping areas. These farms will also host the workshops intended to review and share project experience and discuss results.
