Objectives
An ammonia emission reduction of 15% by 2030 is expected for the beef cattle sector in Flanders. But today there is only 1 recognized emission-reducing measure for the beef cattle sector, namely grazing in combination with completely empty stalls. In a first test a good agreement between theoretical and effective feed consumption but also revealed some bottlenecks (use of roughage in packs, estimation of feed value of concentrate with urea,...) that we want to eliminate in this project. The challenge is with this project group is how to make an assurance system for low protein feed that is feasible, affordable, controllable and widely applicable in the beef cattle sector.
Activities
The project approach includes 4 steps. A first step is to determine which conditions the beef cattle farm must meet in order to demonstrably apply low protein feed. In a second stop, an app will be developed that will allow livestock farmers to provide the necessary information. In a third step, producers will work with feed consultants to formulate appropriate rations. These rations must comply with the protein content restrictions, but must also guarantee good animal performance and will be based as much as possible on feed resources present on the farm or in the vicinity of the farm. The follow-up of the low-protein diet and the set requirements on a minimum of three farms for one year is the final step.
