Objectives
Traditional orchards are important features of the European landscape but more than 80% have disappeared in the last decades. They are being replaced by modern systems with higher yields, but this change is leading to a significant reduction in landscape attractiveness and also in the numbers of different crop varieties and species grown, quality, biodiversity and genetic resources. Moreover, the know-how of the traditional growers is also getting lost rapidly.
The ESTO project aimed to develop innovative ways of teaching and learning about apple farming, to help preserve traditional orchards as ecologically and economically sustainable systems, paying special attention to their higher biodiversity.

Activities
Preparation of teaching material, the development of a specific curriculum on “traditional orchards”, a picture pool and knowledge database with dictionary, literature, courses, etc. are some of the activities carried out by the project. These focus mainly on apple farming covering the whole process, from growing and planting techniques to orchard management and processing and marketing of products.
The project produced a knowledge database that complements the teaching materials developed by the project and provides further sources of info for farmers managing traditional orchards. The database has six sections: Dictionary, Literature, Expert text, Courses, Contacts and Links. Although the courses section is out of date and no longer valid, the other parts are still very useful.
Additional information
It is crucial to consider the local specificities of traditional orchards, not only regarding the place (e.g. climate or soil) but also the type of management practices. This aspect is very well considered in the knowledge database. For example, the part on Expert text contains material only in English, but the other sections are organised according to the source country or language (Germany, Denmark, France, Austria, Poland and Hungary). This helps to better access to local knowledge. Especially remarkable is the dictionary, which compiles a long list of more than 200 terms and phrases translated into five languages.
Content-wise the material is sorted according to the main knowledge categories addressed by the project: pomology, care & management, processing & marketing. This is particularly helpful for the links and contacts provided, allowing farmers and advisers to reach the right sources, depending on their information needs.
