Feed Back Farm, Proeftuin voor het lokaal verwaarden van organische reststromen
Objectives
The experimental garden of Feed Back Farm conducts research into the valorisation of organic residues from land-based agriculture and thereby tries to close the cycle in potential agricultural clusters. The larvae of black soldier flies (BSF) are used as an 'intermediary' to convert low-value nutrients from the organic residual streams into high-quality proteins and fats that will serve as food for fish farming (and in a subsequent stage also for chickens and pigs) . The excretions of the fish are in turn used for fertilizing vegetables that are grown under controlled conditions (also called aquaponics).
Objectives
De proeftuin van Feed Back Farm doet onderzoek naar het verwaarden van organische restromen uit de grondgebonden landbouw en probeert daarmee de kringloop te sluiten in potentiële agrarische clusters. Daarbij worden de larven van black soldier flies (BSF) als ‘intermediair’ gebruikt om laagwaardige nutriënten uit de organische reststromen om te zetten in hoogwaardige eiwitten en vetten, die zullen dienen als voer voor visteelt (en in een vervolgstadium ook voor kippen en varkens). De excreties van de vissen worden op hun beurt weer gebruikt voor de bemesting van groenten die worden geteeld onder gecontroleerde condities (ook wel aquaponics genoemd).
Activities
The primary goal is to test and prepare circular food production systems for the valorization of organic residual flows from land-based agriculture. The Feed Back Farm concept will be built and tested at the Kuiper farm. Feed residues from the dairy farm are used to produce BSF larvae. The feed residues are supplemented with cheese whey to obtain the correct moisture from the substrate. During the project, a number of other organic waste streams such as catering waste, or residual streams from potential cluster parties will also be tested. The larvae have 2 outputs:
1. Compost, this can be used to fertilize grassland.
Activities
Het primaire doel is het testen en praktijk klaar maken van circulaire voedselproductie systemen voor het verwaarden van organische reststromen uit de grondgebonden landbouw. Het Feed Back Farm concept dat gebouwd en getest gaat worden bij maatschappij Kuiper. Voerresten uit het melkveebedrijf worden om BSF larven te produceren. De voerresten worden aangevuld met kaaswei om de juiste vochtigheid van substraat te verkrijgen. Gedurende het project zullen ook een aantal andere stromen van organisch afval zoals horeca afval, of reststromen van potentiële cluster partijen getest worden. De larven hebben 2 outputs:
1. Compost, dit kan gebruikt worden om grasland te bemesten.
Contexte
De agro-food sector staat voor de uitdaging om de transitie te maken van een lineair productiemodel naar een circulair voedselsysteem. Het huidige lineaire model draait nog grotendeels om het gebruik van inputs en leidt tot aantasting van bodem, water, lucht, landschap en biodiversiteit. In een circulair voedselsysteem worden biologische en materiële kringlopen gesloten om nutriënten en andere inputs zolang mogelijk in het systeem te houden. Deze nieuwe benadering leidt niet alleen tot een efficiënter grondstoffengebruik en vermindering van de milieubelasting, maar vormt ook het vertrekpunt voor innovatieve oplossingen en nieuwe meerwaarde strategieën.
