Context

The driving force behind the Embrace FARM Encircle Programme is to support the families impacted by all types of serious and sudden traumas on farms in Ireland. In Ireland, 210 lives have been lost in work related accidents in agriculture (2011 to 2020). Farming remains the most dangerous occupation.  It is estimated there are 2500 near miss accidents each year. There are 2 farm suicides per week in the UK, In Ireland the Encircle Project estimates this to be at least 1 farm suicide per week however statistics in Ireland are not clear on these numbers due to the sensitivity of this information. However, there is a huge gap in co-ordinated services and support for farm families in the aftermath of such sudden trauma. Currently there is no provision for centralised professional, practical and technical support for the farming sector in the aftermath of a farm fatality or major traumatic accident. This project aims to address that gap by providing such a structured, single point of access to local professional and peer to peer supports for affected farm families and communities.

Objectives

The Embrace FARM Encircle Programme aims to provide supports (emotional and practical) to farm families and communities affected by sudden trauma on the farm. It aims to do so by providing them with information and a structured, single point of contact access to local professional and peer to peer supports.  Currently there is no such set of structured supports available for families impacted by sudden trauma (fatal or near miss) on the farm.

1 Practice Abstracts

Farming is the most dangerous occupation in high-income countries worldwide. The farm is the most common workplace for persons over 65 years to suffer fatal or life-threatening injuries. Each year Embrace FARM organises a remembrance event for families impacted by sudden trauma on farms. There is a huge gap however, in co-ordinated services and supports for these farm families in the aftermath of such trauma. This project, called “Encircle”, and managed by the Embrace FARM team, seeks to address this gap in services by providing supports and information to impacted farm families. This will be done through the formation of five Regional Hubs. These hubs can provide independent sector specific professional and practical follow up to impacted farm families and communities. This project also plans to advocate on behalf of and influence policies which affect the farm families, while also increasing public awareness of the new service and its supports.

Following the implementation of Embrace FARM Encircle Programme, it will be the first-time rural communities can rely on a wholistic set of structured, timely supports to meet their needs as they go through this traumatic period of their lives. The independent nature of the Embrace FARM Encircle Programme will provide a unique and novel way to manage these situations for the families and rural communities affected while always keeping their emotional needs and wellbeing at the centre of everything they do.
