Control of cabbage gall midge on organic CSA farms (Community supported agriculture)
Beheersing van koolgalmug op biologische CSA-bedrijven
Objectives
Organic CSA farms in Flanders are experiencing increasing damage caused by the cabbage gall midge (Contarinia nasturtii), resulting in twisting of the heart leaves and other deformations in cabbage crops. By monitoring the cabbage gall midge, evaluating control measures on-farm and exploring innovative control techniques, the OG wants to develop IPM strategies tailored to CSA companies. In the short term, the growers will gain more insight into the factors that influence population development. This insight will help to determine successful preventive measures and guidelines for an efficient strategy for applying anti-insect nets.
Objectives
Biologische CSA-bedrijven in Vlaanderen ervaren toenemende schade door de koolgalmug (Contarinia nasturtii), met als gevolg ‘draaihartige’ of ‘hartloze’ planten en groeistoornissen bij koolgewassen. Via monitoring van de koolgalmug, het on-farm evalueren van controlemaatregelen en het verkennen van innovatieve beheersingstechnieken, wil de OG komen tot IPM-strategieën op maat van de CSA-bedrijven. Op korte termijn krijgen de telers via monitoring meer inzicht in de factoren die de populatieontwikkeling beïnvloeden. Dit inzicht helpt bij het bepalen van de preventieve maatregelen met de beste slaagkansen en de richtlijnen voor een efficiënte afdekstrategie met insectengaas.
Activities
To contribute to a greater harvest security, the OG wants to achieve the following objectives:
- A monitoring system for the cabbage gall midge to gain insight into important aspects of the population development, eg influence of climate factors
- Identification of successful IPM strategies for tailor-made control of the cabbage gall midge, applicable and practically feasible within the specific CSA business context with self-harvesting system, such as an efficient and cost-effective covering strategy with fine-meshed insect nets
- Raise awareness among all growers in the CSA network and other small-scale organic companies with cabbage crops about the control of cabbage gall midge.
Activities
Om de oogstzekerheid veilig te stellen, wil de OG volgende doelstellingen bereiken:
- Een monitoringssysteem voor de koolgalmug om belangrijke aspecten bij de populatie-ontwikkeling van de koolgalmug in beeld te krijgen, bv. invloed van klimaatfactoren.
- Identificatie van succesvolle IPM-strategieën voor de beheersing van de koolgalmug, toepasbaar en praktisch haalbaar binnen de specifieke CSA-bedrijfscontext met zelfoogstsysteem, zoals een efficiënte en rendabele afdekstrategie met fijnmazige netten
- Alle telers in het CSA-netwerk en andere biologische kleinschalige bedrijven met koolgewassen sensibiliseren over de beheersing van koolgalmug.
