Objectives

When commercialising wild forest products (WFP) or non wood forest products (NWFP), a certification scheme can help to ensure certain characteristics to the consumer. These standards, more common in agricultural or wood products, recognise their quality or special attributes. They are therefore an important marketing tool, enhancing the value of the product and differentiating it from competitors. (see additional information field)

Additional information

Even so, many forest producers or pickers do not know which values or products are certifiable. To help them identify potentially useful certification schemes, the StarTree project elaborated a guide summarising those applicable to these products. In addition to the more common ones, such as organic or forest certifications, the guide lists the following types:

* Wild products: The most significant example is the FairWild Foundation that certifies the wild origin and sustainable collection of the products.

* Environmental performance: These identify products or services with low environmental impact, e.g. the European Union Ecolabel.

* Quality and food safety: ensuring proper preparation of food products. The International Standard Organization (ISO) developed the most important standards in this sector (E.g. ISO 9001, ISO 9000 or ISO 22000).

* Socio-economic: For example, the Fair Trade certification which looks for fair prices for producers. Applicable to many forest products (e.g. herbs, herbal teas, spices, juices, honey).

* Origin, geographical indications and traditional specialties: NWFP are good candidates because their collection is, in many cases, connected to specific practices and local culture. The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) or the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) might be applicable for instance.
