Context

Au fil des années, l’agriculture et la foresterie ont subi une certaine scission qui a conduit à spécialiser les espaces (mécanisation, diminution de la main d’oeuvre), dans leurs usages. L’agroforesterie connaît un certain intérêt auprès d’agriculteurs, surtout en grandes cultures. Ces derniers poursuivent différents objectifs : régulation thermique, lutte contre l’érosion, biodiversité, production de bois d’oeuvre et de bois-énergie, de fruits, vision patrimoniale… Ces plantations ont leur place en élevage, mais leur développement n’est pas encore observé sur le terrain. Parallèlement, le sylvopastoralisme suppose d’être repensé, en intégrant des solutions techniques nouvelles.  

Objectives

Trees in rows with livestock and wood pastures have their place in extensive cattle system: production of livestock litter, contribution to food and fodder autonomy (supplements in forest fruits and fodder on the ground), diversification of marketed productions and new sources of incomes (wood). Environmental benefits are also mentioned, such as reduction of erosion or absorption of nitrogen, animal welfare. So many tracks that deserve to be checked.

Objectives

Agroforesterie et sylvopastoralisme  ont toute leur place au sein d’un système bovin allaitant extensif de montagne ou de piémont : production de litières animales, contribution à l’autonomie alimentaire et fourragère (compléments en fruits forestiers et fourrage au sol), diversification des productions commercialisées et des sources de revenus (vente de bois). Des bénéfices environnementaux sont également cités, comme la réduction de l’érosion ou l’absorption de l’azote, le bien-être animal. Autant de pistes qui mériteraient d’être vérifiées.

Activities

Action 1. Building an experimental device for technical solutions: diagnosis of farmers groups, state of the art on proven solutions, implementation of pilots.
Action 2: Results capitalization: pilots monitoring and evaluation, marketing study (potential for commercial valorisation), comparison with similar projects, building a supporting offer (agro-forestry-pastoral advice).
Action 3: Results dissemination and implementation of innovations: OG coordination, dissemination, awareness and training (farmers and advisers).

Activities

Action 1. Construction d'un dispositif d'expérimentation de solutions techniques : diagnostics de groupes d'agriculteurs, état de l'art sur les solutions éprouvées, mise en place des pilotes.
Action 2 : Capitalisation des résultats: suivi-évaluation des pilotes, étude marketing (potentiel de valorisation commerciale), confrontation aux projets analogues, construction d’une offre d'accompagnement (conseil agrosylvopastoral).
Action 3 : Diffusion des résultats et mise en oeuvre des innovations : coordination du GO, diffusion, sensibilisation et formation (agriculteurs et conseillers).

3 Practice Abstracts

Farmers and forest owners can benefit from the results obtained on 6 experimental systems on 5 farms (GAEC AUTHIER, BELLEVUE, DELATOUR, DERRAMOND, ESPY), where the practices implemented within the AGROSYl framework continue to be monitored and reinforced.
Through these pilot sites, white mulberry appears to be the most innovative solution: as ensiled fodder, the contributions of mulberry are equivalent to corn; it is also effective in direct grazing. Very resistant to drought, it requires irrigation during the establishment phase (first 2 years). Wood mulching is undoubtedly the most proven solution: its impacts and benefits are known, the technical itinerary is established. In silvopastoralism, the project mainly highlighted what should not be done (% thinning, diffused light VS direct light), and management sequences upstream of the cutting are available, depending on the type of livestock. A fairly intuitive solution, the consumption of forest fruits requires continued data collection to fully verify the impacts.
They have access to these results through publications on social networks (Bois paysan and partners Facebook pages) and the website of the Ariège Chamber of Agriculture. Technical sheets have been produced for each pilote site.

Les agriculteurs et les propriétaires forestiers peuvent bénéficier des résultats obtenus sur 6 dispositifs expérimentaux sur 5 fermes (GAEC AUTHIER, BELLEVUE, DELATOUR, DERRAMOND, ESPY), où les pratiques mises en place dans le cadre AGROSYl continuent d’être suivies et renforcées.
A travers ces pilotes, le mûrier blanc apparaît comme la solution la plus innovante : en tant que fourrage ensilé, les apports du mûrier sont équivalents au maïs ; il est également efficace en pâturage direct. Très résistant aux sécheresses, il nécessite l’irrigation en phase d’implantation (2 premières années). Le paillage bois est sans doute la solution la plus éprouvée : ses impacts et ses intérêts sont connus, l’itinéraire technique est acquis. En sylvopastoralisme, le projet a surtout mis en avant ce qu’il ne faut pas faire (% d’éclaircies, lumière diffuse VS lumière directe), et des itinéraires TK  en amont de la coupe sont disponibles, selon le type de cheptel. Solution assez intuitive, la consommation de fruits forestiers demande de poursuivre la collecte des données pour vérifier complètement les impacts.   
Ils ont accès à ces résultats à travers les parutions sur les réseaux sociaux (pages Facebook Bois paysan et partenaires) et le site web de la Chambre d’agriculture de l’Ariège. Des fiches techniques ont été produites pour chaque pilote.

For French agricultural and forestry support structures: the results of the project were the subject of 5 publications in the specialized press (Réussir Bovin Viande, Web agri, Forêt Méditerranéennes, PROFILBIO Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Réseau Rural Français).
They can also benefit from the production of training offers broken down into 3 educational scenarios and an individual advice offer: thinning project, white mulberry planting project, mulching diagnosis. Advisors from the Ariège Chamber of Agriculture are available to these structures to improve the skills of their teams and enable them to deploy these service offerings to farmers and forest owners in their respective territories.

Pour les structures françaises d’accompagnement agricole et forestier : les résultats du projet ont fait l’objet de 5 publications dans la presse spécialisée (Réussir Bovin Viande, Web agri, Forêt Méditerranéennes, PROFILBIO Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Réseau Rural Français).
Ils peuvent également bénéficier de la production d’offre de formation déclinée en 3 scénarios pédagogiques et d’une offre de conseil individuel : projet d’éclaircie, projet de plantation mûrier blanc, diagnostic paillage. Les conseillers de la Chambre d’agriculture de l’Ariège sont à la disposition de ces structures pour faire monter en compétences leurs équipes et leur permettre de déployer ces offres de services auprès des agriculteurs et des propriétaires forestiers de leurs territoires respectifs.

For research organizations and international structures, 2 international scientific publications have been produced, and the Ariège Chamber of Agriculture is participating in the European i2connect project to transfer and exchange with other similar projects. A poster (in English) was presented at the World Agroforestry Congress (Montpellier, May 2019), and a publication from EIP-AGRI, on the themes of Forestry and Agroforestry, integrated AGROSYL into a selection of several GO projects PEI.

Pour les organismes de recherche et les structures internationales, 2 publications scientifiques internationales ont été produites, et la Chambre d’agriculture de l’Ariège participe au projet européen i2connect pour transférer et échanger avec d’autres projets analogues. Un poster (en anglais)a été présenté lors du Congrès Mondial de l’agroforesterie (Montpellier, mai 2019), et une parution de l’EIP-AGRI, portant sur les thématiques Forêt et Agroforesterie, a intégré AGROSYL dans une sélection de plusieurs projets GO PEI.
