Physical & demographic characteristics of LAG area

The Blois district is strongly influenced by the geographical features of the Loire Valley. The region is strategically located in the heart of the Centre-Val de Loire Region, at the crossroads of diverse natural regions, including the Beauce plains, the vineyard-covered hillsides, and the Sologne forests. The mosaic of landscapes and terroirs in this area provides significant agricultural and scenic diversity.

Assets & land use of the LAG area

The region welcomes millions of tourists each year, drawn by its landscapes (with the Loire Valley listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site), castles and gardens, cycling routes (such as La Loire à Vélo and Les Châteaux de la Loire à Vélo), gastronomy, and the art of living (local products, AOP vineyards).

The territory, also known as the "Pays des Châteaux" ("Land of Castles"), includes the Royal Château of Blois and the Châteaux of Chambord, Chaumont-sur-Loire, and Cheverny.

The Pays des Châteaux, which administered the LEADER 2014–2022 programme, comprises 89 municipalities grouped into three intermunicipalities (EPCIs), representing approximately 150,000 inhabitants.

  • Communauté d'Agglomération de Blois (Agglopolys) – 43 municipalities, nearly 110,000 inhabitants
  • Communauté de communes Grand Chambord– 16 municipalities, nearly 21,000 inhabitants
  • Communauté de communes Beauce Val de Loire – 30 municipalities, nearly 20,000 inhabitants

LAG strategy

Key Themes of LAG Strategy

Strategy :

The urban and rural link for an ambitious territorial development while preserving our resources.

Themes :

  • Projecting the Blois-Chambord Val de Loire destination and its stakeholders towards a future of tourism
  • Innovating in the pursuit of the Territorial Food Project
  • Making « low carbon mobility » attractive
  • Preserving biodiversity and raising awareness of future challenges
  • Bringing together actors around the circular economy and the valorisation of our local resources

Additional information on the strategy

The guiding principle of the selected strategy – which naturally emerged – is to work towards strengthening the resilience of the Pays des Châteaux territory by preserving resources in all their forms. Furthermore, local stakeholders expressed a desire to maintain the fundamental theme that guided the 2014–2022 programme: the urban-rural link.

The presence of the Blois urban centre at the heart of the living area necessitates taking into account the synergies between urban and rural areas to understand the logic of territorial development, including rural development challenges.
