Kontext
NIR sensors on forage harvesters were introduced in the late 2000s. Since then, over 10,000 units have been sold. This shows that the technology has become widely adopted in practice. While an increasing number of field forage harvesters operated by contracting companies are equipped with NIR sensors—for example, to document their services for billing purposes—small and medium-sized farms, in particular, are currently deriving little benefit from this sensor data. In practice, many opportunities to use this data—especially historical data—to make better operational decisions are still largely overlooked. Yield and quality maps—including various harvesting data such as the exact harvest date, yield volume, crop moisture content, nutritional components, etc.—can be used to optimize harvesting practices. In particular, NIRS data allow for the estimation of yield potential and nutritional values at the subfield level. A prominent example of this is yield prediction using EO and AI. Forage harvester yield data is an easily scalable technology that provides high-resolution yield data, which, when combined with satellite data, weather data, soil information, and elevation profiles, has proven highly successful in predicting crop yields. However, there is currently a lack of corresponding models for AI-based determination of yield potential in grassland.
Kontext
Activities
1. Generation of agricultural farm data: Determining the optimal harvest time while taking into account forage quality and quantity, economic and agroecological requirements, and the preservation of biodiversity and plant communities. Data collection is carried out primarily using NIR sensors to capture precise information about forage stocks.
2. Data processing and Earth Observation (EO) data acquisition: Homogenization and preprocessing of farm data from participating commercial farms. Establishment of an Earth Observation-based data center for training AI models.
3. Development of AI models: Research aimed at developing an innovative forage yield prediction model for grassland to forecast the optimal mowing time, incorporating practical input from the participating farms.
4. Model evaluation and integration into the GeoBox infrastructure: The developed models are evaluated for their predictive accuracy, robustness, and practical applicability. This includes validation studies using real operational data from farms, as well as continuous adjustment of model parameters based on new sensor data. The final implementation takes place within the GeoBox infrastructure, and its application is evaluated by the participating farms.
5. Project Management and Knowledge Transfer: Established project and risk management methods are applied, and knowledge is transferred to both the field and the scientific community.
Activities
