1 Practice Abstracts

Agroforestry – the practical integration of woody species into an agricultural system – has the potential to contribute to economic profitability, climate adaptation, carbon sequestration, biodiversity, water quantity and quality, animal health and overall viability, as well as some major challenges that hinder large-scale implementation. This project focuses on the main challenges for arable farming: Integrating woody species with all the associated benefits, but with species that can be cut back completely, while maintaining flexibility in farming. Practical experience and comparative research is carried out on sand (in the case of Agroforestrysupplies in Zeeland, Brabant) and clay (in the case of Warmonderhofstede in Dronten), in which the educational branch of the Warmonderhofstede – Aeres MBO Dronten Warmonderhof – on clay is also linked to the largest experimental site of agroforestry on sand.

Agroforestry -het praktisch integreren van houtigen in een agrarisch systeem - kent naast de potentie bij te dragen aan economische rendabiliteit, klimaatadaptie, koolstof vastleggen, biodiversiteit, waterkwantiteit en kwaliteit, diergezondheid en algemene leefbaarheid, ook enkele grote uitdagingen die grootschalige implementatie in de weg staan. Dit project spitst zich toe op de grootste uitdagingen voor de akkerbouw: Het integreren van houtigen met alle bijkomende voordelen, maar met geheel terugsnoeibare soorten, waarbij de boer een flexibele bedrijfsvoering behoud. Er wordt praktijkervaring en vergelijkend onderzoek gedaan op zand (bij Agroforestrysupplies in Zeeland, Brabant) en klei (bij Warmonderhofstede in Dronten), waarbij ook de onderwijstak van de Warmonderhofstede -Aeres MBO Dronten Warmonderhof – op klei gekoppeld wordt aan de grootste experimenteerlocatie van agroforestry op zand.
