1 Practice Abstracts

‘There is a strong need for economically viable wet crops in Laag Holland, and on the basis of recent pilots, rice seems to be an excellent candidate for this.

In order to take the first steps towards adult rice cultivation in the Dutch peat meadow landscape, we intend to set up South Holland’s first serious rice cultivation in the Weider rice project, in cooperation with 4 farmers in 5 locations.

In addition to (1) the success of cultivation, the focus is on (2) the ecological impact (minimisation of greenhouse gas emissions, effects on biodiversity and impact on soil decline) and (3) the rice in the region; the social impact (appropriate within farming practice, role of contractors, acceptance by environmental stakeholders) as well as the development of market demand and a total product chain from the ‘Wei & Water’ partnership of the 4 farmers.”

"Er is een grote behoefte aan economisch rendabele natte teelten in Laag Holland, en op basis van recente pilots lijkt rijst daarvoor een uitstekende kandidaat.

Om de eerste stappen naar een volwassen rijstteelt in het Nederlands veenweidelandschap te zetten willen we in het project Weiderijst, in samenwerking met 4 boeren op 5 locaties de eerste serieuze rijstteelt van Zuid-Holland opzetten.

De focus ligt - naast (1) het succes van de teelt - op (2) de ecologische impact (minimalisatie van broeikasgas-emissies, effecten op biodiversiteit en impact op bodemdaling) en (3) de rijst in de regio; de sociale impact (passend binnen boerenpraktijk, rol van loonwerkers, acceptatie door omgevingspartijen) als ook het ontwikkelen van marktvraag en een totale productketen vanuit het samenwerkingsverband “Wei & Water” van de 4 landbouwers."
