Objectives

NA

Objectives

High slurry production from pig rearing entails waste management costs for farmers and environmental problems. The Efficient Heat project tested new technologies to reduce slurry volume, recover nutrients and avoid emissions of pollutants. The resulting waste treatment process reduces management costs and produces fertiliser which can be sold, generating additional sources of income for farmers. (see additional information field)

Activities

(see additional information field)

Additional information

The improved treatment process developed by the project involves first settling the slurry solid part and subsequently adding chemicals to remove it. The water of the remaining liquid part is removed in an energy-efficient evaporator. Finally, the resulting evaporated gases are treated using an ion exchange process to avoid pollutant emissions and recover ammonia which is a valuable nutrient.

Introduced improvements reduce treatment costs by 40%. The slurry is concentrated up to 60%; phosphorus is recovered up to a 100% and nitrogen up to a 15% for fertilizer use. The process also reduces ammonia emissions up to 95%. http://www.efficientheat.eu/
