Context

Sowohl die Klimawandelprognosen als auch die Biodiversitätsverluste sind alarmierend. Selbst auf extensive bewirtschaftete Grünlandfläche sind die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels deutlich spürbar. Es besteht mehr Forschungsbedarf, welche Faktoren zu einer Stabilisierung wichtiger Ökosystemprozesse beitragen und welche Maßnahmen hinsichtlich des Klimawandels notwendig sind. Zudem fehlt konkretes Wissen und praktische Erfahrung für eine standortangepasste Umsetzung Vorort.

Both forecasted climate change and biodiversity losses are alarming. Even on extensive grazing grassland, the effects of climate change are clearly noticeable. There is a need for more research about the factors which contribute to stabilisation of important ecosystem processes and about the measures necessary to face climate change. In addition, there is a lack of concrete knowledge and practical experience for on-site adapted implementation.

Objectives

The aim of the project is to test various approaches that support site-specific, dimate-friendly, resilient grassland management. For this purpose the "Holistic Planned Grazing' - pasture management (see A. Savory) combined with improvement of soil life will be applied. Both measures support high level of biodiversity, structures and land-uses diversity. For the participating farms individual needs and business goals will be defined. Changes and progress concerning the ecosystem performance (soil carbon storage, soil life, faunistic and floristic diversity) will be evaluated. The results of the project will be used to edit a best-practice guide and derive recommendations for practice.

Objectives

Ziel des Projekts ist die Erprobung verschiedener Herangehensweisen, die einer standortgerechten, klimafreundlichen und resilienten Grünlandbewirtschaftung fördern. Dafür wird im Projekt das „Holistic Planned Grazing“- Weidemanagement (nach A. Savory) eingesetzt sowie die Förderung des Bodenlebens. Durch die Integration unterschiedlich landwirtschaftlichen Betriebe werden Bedürfnisse und persönliche Betriebsziele definiert. Veränderungen und Fortschritte von Ökosystemleistungen (Kohlenstoffspeicherung, Bodenleben, Fauna und Flora) werden erfasst. Aus den Ergebnissen des Projekts soll ein Best-Practice-Leitfaden erstellt und Empfehlungen abgeleitet werden.

1 Practice Abstracts

In the KUHproKLIMA project, farmers and scientists worked together to develop strategies that can contribute to stabilizing important ecosystem processes in grasslands by means of appropriately adapted grazing regarding to climate change. Innovative measures, not yet applied in the pre-alpine region, were combined with each other and applied and tested site-adapted on the participating farms. This included, in particular, holistic pasture management (HPG) and the development of so-called land planning concepts. A particular focus was to better understand the influence of the grazing cow on soil life, soil carbon and plant populations. In addition the use of compost extract was investigated on various test plots. In a second step, appropriate management proposals were derived from all the trials and then implemented. Finally, the aim was to compile the knowledge and experience gained in a comprehensive guide.

Im Projekt KUHproKLIMA haben Landwirte und Wissenschaftler in kollaborativer Zusammenarbeit Strategien erarbeitet, die hinsichtlich des Klimawandels durch eine entsprechend angepasste Beweidung zu einer Stabilisierung wichtiger Ökosystemprozesse im Grünland beitragen können.  Es wurden innovative, im Voralpengebiet bisher noch nicht angewendete Maßnahmen miteinander kombiniert und standortangepasst auf den teilnehmenden Betrieben angewendet und getestet. Dazu gehörte insbesondere das ganzheitliche Weidemangement (HPG) sowie die Entwicklung von sogenannten Landplanungskonzepten. Ein besonderer Fokus lag darauf, den Einfluss der Weidekuh besser zu verstehen, den sie auf das Bodenleben, den Bodenkohlenstoff und den Pflanzenbestand ausübt. In einem zweiten Schritt wurden aus allen Versuchen entsprechende Managementvorschläge abgeleitet und umgesetzt. Zum Schluss wurden in einem umfangreichen Leitfaden das erarbeitete Wissen und die Erfahrungen zusammengetragen.
