The Transformative Loop Methodology: an adaptive approach to managing networks for urban food system transformation

Collaboration within urban alternative food initiatives typically happens through informal exchanges, meetings, or local projects. However, these interactions rarely evolve into a structured learning process capable of adapting to the changing needs of organisations and communities. As networks grow, differences in local contexts, stakeholder priorities and organisational capacities make collaboration increasingly complex.

Within the REDESIGN project, the Transformative Loop Methodology (TLM) is being developed as a practical way to support collaboration between organisations without imposing fixed procedures or predefined solutions. The methodology treats the network itself as a learning process. It both facilitates and creates regular opportunities for participants to exchange experiences, reflect on common challenges, adapt ideas to their own context and continuously improve the way they work together. At the same time, the methodology evolves through feedback from the participating organisations, allowing both the network and its coordination mechanisms to be refined over time. The approach therefore remains responsive as priorities and challenges change overtime. Recent developments have also introduced social network analysis as a way to better understand how relationships emerge, how knowledge circulates between organisations and where new collaborations can be encouraged.

Although the TLM is still within its pilot phase, suggestions from the first review reveal that continuous observation of interactions between actors, as well as reviewing their feedback, is crucial to enable an increase engagement and collaboration. This information can then be used to adapt workshops, events and other network activities to better meet participants' needs. The methodology can help municipalities, community organisations, and other stakeholders build stronger relationships, improve knowledge exchange and create collaborations that are better suited to their local context.
